The definitive travel reference for America's most famous, and infamous, Civil War battle sites-a tribute to the war's 150th anniversary (2011–2015). But the library of books about the Civil War that now exists-and is sure to.The Civil War was not just the bloodiest American conflict.

But the library of books about the Civil War that now exists-and is sure to swell during the war’s sesquicentennial which begins this week-is absolutely worth it. It was also the war that settled who we are as a nation, a war whose outcome and rhetoric have defined us ever after. Compiling a list of essential books about the war is an absurd task, simply because-no kidding-so many are essential. Try to imagine another subject where you omit writers of the caliber of William McFeely, Bruce Catton, T. Harry Williams, or Burke Davis. So consider this list a mere starting point.

The Book of Invasions – Lebor Gabála Ýrenn – is a compilation of manuscripts describing the very specific discovery of Ireland ('on the fifteenth, on a Saturday') following the Creation and the Flood. The Pop-Up Book of Invasions is Fiona Farrell's poetic response to a six-month stay in Ireland as inaugural recipient of the Rathcoola Residency in County Cork. The poems in The Pop-up Book draw heavily and vividly on the landscape, history and mythology of Ireland, sharing a sense of discovery, but they also make connections with home, New Zealand, childhood.

I don't usually buy pop-up books because I find the material is usually very superficial and the pop up icons are usually cheaply made and constructed and can easily be damaged. "The Big Book of The Civil War" is different. I find the pop up portions very well constructed and not easily torn by use. In addition, this book presents a rather well done introduction to the American Civil War. In this 150th year commemoration of the American Civlil War, this book would make a wonderful tool to teach the events, reasons, and sufferings of this horrible War to young children.

This 11 1/8 inch by 9 inch beautifully illustrated book has 10 thick card stock pages which hold up under careful use by children. A full color pictorial cover illustrates a Confederate and a Union soldier next to each other staring each other down. In the background you see various scenes from battlegrounds. Most children aged 8 to 12 will have their interests hooked and will want to read and experience the tabs, pop ups, and sliders of this great pop up book.

The book contains short articles about the following:
Life before the Civil War
Fighting Families
Child Soldiers
Slavery
Frederick Douglas
Sojourner Truth
Harriet Tubman
Harriot Beecher Stowe
Abraham Lincoln
Jefferson Davis
Ulysses Grant
William Tecumseh Sherman
Robert E. Lee
George Gordan Meade
Women at Home
A Soldier's Life
Unifroms
Weapons
Life in Camp
Medical Help
Foirt Sumter
First Battle of Bull Run
Clash of the Ironclads
Fredericksburg
Gettysburg
Vicksburg
Appomattox Surrender

Some of the more interesting pop up experiences include:
circular portraits of Lincoln and Davis which slide up to reveal fact about their life
diaries that open
sliders that reveal more information about many of the events and people
a medical table that pops up
a pup tent that erects when you pull the tab
and one of the best pop up images I have ever seen - a very large intricate civil war canon that opens in the middle of the last two pages.

This children's pop up book will create interest in the heart of most children who ever heard of the American Civil War. It would make a wonderful keepsake to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the American Civil War.

I give the book four stars only because I think the publisher could have included more pop ups like the wonderful cannon on the last two pages. Actually this is the only true "pop up" experience in the book that pops up when you open the page.
