Crisp switches between the present and past; I sometimes find this irritating, but it works here as we learn how the kid from an unhappy home becomes first a top soldier, then a slightly seedy hit-man. Some scenes (like the one where a younger Griffin falls into the hands of the East German secret police) are not for the squeamish. But if you want a grubbier, less refined George Smiley, Crisp's creation is a cracking read.

The ""odd job man"" is middle-aging roughneck George Griffin, who supplements his income as an encyclopedia salesman with strongarm stuff-like tracking down a Soviet agent, who has disappeared in London, for the CI. But Crisp fills out this short-form plot with flashbacks to the previous 40 years of George's life-stepfather brutality, blundering early marriage, scruffy military service, revolving girls; none of this is thoroughly dull, but neither is it genuine character-in-depth material, and it kills the thriller pace while George remains just another, not very appealing, incarnation of the wry, boozing, lonely British tough guy.

The Odd Job. A Sarah Kelling and Max Bittersohn Mystery. In its fledgling days, the one-man Bittersohn Detective Agency had rented a small office in a big building on Boston’s Windy Corner at the junction of Boylston and Tremont streets.

The Odd Job. Some previous tenant had left a battered oak desk and an old-fashioned swivel chair; Max had never got around to changing them.
