The McTavish Girls book. When the book finally gets going, it's no great shock, and the unfolding 'drama' although well pitched, is lacklustre because your interest is already tarnished by the dreary and repetitive setup.

Your father has seen fit to leave us, girls, without so much as a parting word or a wave. How very inconsiderate and how very typical of a ma. ‘M. said her eldest, in a quiet, pleading voice. It’s just the three of us now, girls. What help your father gave us we must do without. She turned away and, without a backwards glance, led her daughters from the grave towards a side gate and a lane that disappeared into the darkness of overhanging trees. Jualth and Lillandith were local names and not those used in books or on maps, and the apparent absence of road signs did nothing to encourage the adventurous.

After reading this overly long drawn out tail, I wonder were the editor was who somehow failed to remove at least 25% of this rambling monstrosity. As for the boyfriend Paul, one wonders why he was even included in the story. All you learn of him is that he is a stereotypical whiskey drinking modern art student. I wouldn't even call him an artist there is so little information. Also, he is a lazy out of shape male with out a single redeeming quality to him. That is the total of the information and character development we see of him. The author would have been better off listing him as the narrator. While the book starts out with some suspense, it is so drawn out that by the point you get any information, you really don't care about it anymore because you are so board.

Life is defined by anticipation and this author has caught that timeless them. Once you have had an experience the mystery and anticipation is removed. While you may not regret or be disappointed in the experience still the degree of anticipation is less exciting. The author doles out each detail one at a time regarding the history of a family, community, traditions, and flora and fauna! Loved the book!

I was really enjoying the story, until Annie beat the "livin' daylights" out of Paul! Totally WRONG! And to top it off, he STAYED with her... again... WRONG!
