You’ve got quite a vivid imagination there, Brodie,’ she responded. Alistair MacGregor died without issue. Sheriff Strathclyde sat watching Kailash, visibly moved by her story, and somewhat impressed that his deceased colleague had performed such a chivalrous, if fatal task.

I got this when it was on free offer around mid Novembr 2010. As I particularly enjoy crime thrillers based in Scotland I was looking forward to the opportunity to read it.

Predominantly set around Edinburgh, the central character is Brodie McLennan, a motorbike riding female Scottish lawyer. Brodie"s grandfather is a high ranker in the legal profession and her mother is an ex call girl - other underworld connections are also thrown into the mix together with resentment from other solicitors. Work a murder and a woman locked away in an asylum scrawling Brodie"s name in blood on the wall and you pretty well get the nucleus of an interesting tale.

The story should have worked well but I found myself disappointed - it's difficult to really specify why, the writing is OK, character development is OK but it just didn't quite manage to captivate me.

Perhaps it"s simply that for me it never really got above the level of OK.

I am not sure how to categorise this book. The central character Brodie is a Scottish lawyer who seems to be on the fringe of various gangs who she defends in court, I thought that her character was well developed but most of the other characters were very superficially described. It did not help that I know nothing about the Scottish court system but it seemed realistic, although I hope not so corrupt. The story is unbelievable but it still seems to hang together so I kept reading as I wanted to see "who did it".
There are a number of murders that Brodie is framed for and to prove her innocence she has to find the killer and really that is the whole plot.
