Whatever tender feelings he may once have had for women in general were lost in the backwash of a disastrous early marriage, but Adam Kenton didn’t notice anything missing. He lived out of suitcases. and knew bellhops and bartenders by their first names in a hundred tank towns across the country. His work often kept him on the move and for him one city was the same as another, all of them corrupt and full of men with murderous intent. He was fascinated by power, and since men held all of it these were the people he frequented. Suspicious of everybody, trusting no one, he saw.

I read this good book years ago, Shane Stevens takes you right into the mind of the killer, He is a supurb writer...Scanning on Amazon one night , I was looking for new Kindle books to read, and suddenly came across ( By reason of Insanity ), so i decide to buy it for my kindel and reread it again, as it was like the first time i read it , which was in 1972, i was not disappointed, again i could not put it down, i only wish Shane Stevens would write more books, i think he's only writen three, a real shame...... I rated this book (5 stars) and i would higly recomand it to anyone who likes suspense, murder, and an exciting read. with the anticipation of what will happen next.......

Great book. suspenseful, a psychological cat and mouse game. Only the strong stomached should read it, there are some pretty gruesome details and you will read the thoughts of a psychopath, not pretty. Well written, well plotted, has you on the edge of your seat, wondering what will happen next. Will they ever catch this evil genius?

I read this book years ago. It scared me so bad then that I would have to put it down and walk away from it to regroup and I have never forgotten it. I read it again recently and it scared the @#$% out of me as if it were the first time. I have never read a book that totally sucked me in and took me on such a freakish, disturbing nightmare into a killers SICK life. It's just plain old scarey, terrifying, horrific and captivating. You have to keep pinching yourself and keep saying "Its only a story...its only a story." If you like to get scared THIS is the book for you.

When I first read this book back in the 70s, I thought this was the most frightening book that I ever read. I still think that today. It, at that time, made me really want to be a Forensic Psychologist because I felt like I was walking around in the brain of Bishop. I wanted to know what made these kind of people do what they did. Well, I found out. I enjoyed this book so much so, that I occasionally re-read it just as a reminder that there are still some exceptional murder mysteries out there. And this truly, is one of them.

'By Reason of Insanity' is the type of the modern serial killer novel, the equivalent of 'Crime and Punishment' for existential criminals and Conan Doyle's and Poe's work for the basic detective story. It is also one of the most frightening books you can read on the subject, fiction or nonfiction. Its slowly unfolding, dark story has the same grimy, smoky feel as Fincher's film 'Zodiac', another absurdly under-appreciated tale of murder and the blackness of the human soul which, oddly enough, takes place around the same time period. Without a flashy villain ala Hannibal, Stevens's work has fallen out of favor with the general readership -- hopefully this will change with the Chicago Review reprint, as this book's superiority to the better known Lecter books makes its obscurity completely ridiculous. Also be sure to check out 'The Anvil Chorus', Shane Stevens's Nazi-hunting tale that rivals and in some ways surpasses Forsyth's 'Day of the Jackal'. Perhaps this reclusive author can be lured out of hiding to give us another tale of the human soul's truest, most secret recesses.

This is arguably the greatest serial killer book ever written. Tremendous storyline and very believable. Book has been around for 40 years but give it a read. You won't regret it. The best.

I can remember reading this book when it first came out and it gave me nightmares for weeks. Stevens has a real gift for creating a tense atmosphere and getting into the mind of his protagonist. It is without a doubt one of the best books of the serial killer genre ever written. ATTENTION HOLLYWOOD: When are you going to make this a film??? (Then again, you probably wouldn't be able to do it justice). Do yourself a favour and read this book..you'll sleep with the lights on, when you eventually get to sleep that is.
This story was definitely not for the faint of heart in terms of violence, in particular, violence towards women. However, there was so much more to the entire novel than the violence. The writing was so detailed and the characters so well drawn that I almost forgot about the violence when it was not on the printed page. Much fuller story line than I ever expected, or have ever really read in most "shock" crime stories. I was completely engrossed from beginning to end. I highly recommend this novel if the subject matter interests you from the start.
