Kyle Mills is the New York Times bestselling author of 18 thrillers, including Red War, Fade, and The Ares Decision. I was a fanatical rock climber for years and always wanted to write a book with a climber as a character-they’re such intriguing and unusual people. In Free Fall, Mark Beamon gets sucked into a crooked presidential race through a seemingly unrelated investigation involving one of the world’s top climbers. This was inspired in many ways by Tom Clancy’s Cardinal of the Kremlin.

Free Fall is actually about a crooked presidential election and I wanted to contrast the simple lifestyle of climbers with the power-hungry existence of the Washington Elite, as well as with my iconoclastic lead character, Mark Beamon

Free Fall is one of the best yet by Kyle Mills. This is another strong outing for Kyle Mills. While I liked Storming Heaven a little more than this book, it is still a very good story and I enjoyed it a great deal.

Free Fall is one of the best yet by Kyle Mills. He took one more shot at adjusting himself into a comfortable position in the cramped backseat and then just gave up. "No one rates a limo, Mr. Beamon. You've probably heard that Senator Hallorin is kind of a stickler for saving gas. This car not only gets great mileage, but it actually runs on natural ga. From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp Series

It's bold. It's dangerous. It's the kind of maverick operation that has made Mark Beamon both the FBI's best agent and its least-likely-to-succeed screw-up.

A top-secret FBI file -- buried in an anonymous government warehouse since J. Edgar Hoover's death -- is missing. The unlucky grad student who uncovered it is dead, and now his ex-girlfriend is on the run, accused of the murder. The only man everyone agrees can find the young woman and turn up the explosive document is "off-duty," suspended and under the threat of prosecution by the bureau itself.

Beamon knows better than anyone that this is his last shot to save his career -- and his country. Tracking the young woman down, though, will be the hardest assignment he's ever tackled, for she's a gutsy world-class rock-climber who can drop out of sight anywhere in the world. And even if he finds her and the file, who can he trust when the FBI itself is under suspicion? Beamon has no room for wrong guesses -- or moves. If he blows this one, he'll free fall straight out of the bureau -- and straight into prison....

This is the 3rd Mills installment featuring Mark Beamon, a benched FBI agent who gets called in as the only one likely to find a world-class professional rock climber, Darby Moore, who is on the run. As it turns out she is being sought for the killing of her boyfriend, and for a highly sensitive file her unlucky boyfriend discovered, Prodigy, the result of a secrets-gathering operation (headed by none other than J. Edgar) and thought to have been lost for years. The file contains damning information on certain politicos which makes its possession paramount to some on both sides of the fence. Mills is great at character development and it is typical to cheer for the good guys and hiss the bad apples. The action involved is okay but not on par with the best of the best. And, at times, he can be a bit overly descriptive for my taste. That said, "Free Fall" is an enjoyable read with enough twists and turns to keep most anyone who enjoys political thrillers turning pages until the end. This is definitely above average, really about a 3.5, so I rounded it up.

Decided to buy this book by Kyle Mills when I heard he was going to be the author chosen to complete the latest book which the late Vince Flynn started but was unable to finish. I wanted to check out his style to see how similar his writing style was to Vince's. I was very pleased with this book. It involved subterfuge, international intrigue and lots of action. His style is somewhat similar to Vince's. As a result I have chosen to read several more of Kylle's books. He often writes books about international terrorism, a very popular subject currently.

This story is a bit of a disappointment, in that not much is done with the plot elements available. The main characters chase each other around the globe, but there are no big action scenes. The plot bounces around quite a bit, and at times, adversely affects the continuity of some of the story lines. The ending is as quiet as the rest of the book--all personnel accounted for and mostly living happily ever after. The book lacks the drama and suspense that could have been developed from the basic concepts. Another disappointment was the large number of typos.

Novel was interesting, and very complex

Lengthy with many typos and dropped thoughts. Incomplete sentences. Won't be getting anything from HarperCollins again.

This is another strong outing for Kyle Mills. While I liked Storming Heaven a little more than this book, it is still a very good story and I enjoyed it a great deal.
Once again in this book Mark Beamon is the protagonist, and he has as many flaws as ever. You love rooting for the guy because he isn't the 6 foot 6 ex-marine who can kill the bad guy with an olive fork. He is an ordinary guy like everyone else, just a little more gifted at putting facts together to solve a mystery.
If you like good suspense with a strong story and some action thrown in then this is a book for you. In addition if you are into rock climbing you will most likely enjoy it, and it also has a presidential election aspect so with the 2000 vote coming up that may interest you too.

Except for the misspelling, missing words, incomplete sentences and lack of punctuation in places, this was an interesting book. I think a proofreader is in order for future projects.
Great writing. I ordered another book by Kylie Mills and started it today. Very happy with this author.
