This book is an 'oldie' - published (I think) in 1979. I can remember reading it when it first came out, and although some of the mores and vocabulary of the teenage son of the protagonist are dated, the premise story line still reads well. I always anticipated each new novel by Barbara Michaels (aka Elizabeth Peters) and was saddened by her passing in 2013 at the age of 85. I'm so glad I can still purchase her books on Amazon: right now I'm rereading "Shattered Silk," although my all time favorite book is "Ammie, Come Home." All of these books are well written, hold one's attention and have believable characters - possibly because I'm a old lady and am their contemporary!

I liked the overall mystery and some of the spooky stuff was well done. I also thought the historical angle was interesting without being too much. My big issue with the book was the relationship; there wasn't much development, they kind of just happened. I found it difficult to take them seriously because there was no real build up. I also felt (as I often do with this author's supernatural books) that the climax was kind of rushed and not terribly well explained.
Overall this was a fun book, but not perfect. It was a quick read though, and I would definitely recommend it as something to read around Halloween!

Old houses, ghosts, and not one, but two romances; it's all good. Not as creepy as Ammie Come Home, or Stitches in Time; nor as witty as the Amelia Peabody, Vicky Bliss, or Jacqueline Kirby novels, The Walker in Shadows is a dependably page-turning Barbara Michaels comfort read.

With her trademark nice, normal characters battling malevolent spirits from the past, in this case a pair of star-crossed lovers, there's much to like in this book. If it's not Michaels' best, it's a lot better than a lot of books out there, and holds up well to a reread thirty years after publication. I'm so happy that Michaels'/Peters' books are being Kindleized for a new generation of readers to enjoy.

As the title states i am addicted to this author's style and themes. I love the combination of the history, the mystery and splashes of supernatural entwined within each tale. I'm on a mission to read every book. Four down and now for my next.....love it!

Extent book, eloquently written. I picked up on the clues write well only to discover that things weren't quite what they seem - a mark of a good mystery. The history of the houses painted a nice picture lending a personality beyond the structure of the walls. Would definitely recommend.

Has all the right elements of spooky houses, old mysteries, ghostly appearances and a little romance thrown in. It keeps you reading. The characters are interesting, the mystery is intriguing, and it is well written. I have not been disappointed in Barbara Michaels or Elizabeth Peters.

Love this book. The ghost makes sense and fits well with the story.
This is a great book by a great author. I have read all of her books, but this is one of my favorites. I also recommend Dark on the Other Side and Ammie Come Home. All three books have a just enough of the supernatural in them without being vulgar or gory. These three books are a great read, especially at home, alone, at night!
