Weirdly, although it had played a grim role in recent family history, I felt at ease there. It was something about the high ground, the sense of space, and air that no one else had breathed. out to sea and saw nothing but endless distance. There was just peace. If I wanted to kill myself, I mused, I’d choose somewhere like that. The thought had come from nowhere, jarringly, and I became aware that I was shaking. It was the climb, I told myself. I was unfit and my muscles were complaining

Sixteen-year-old Jess Tennant has never met any of her relatives, until her mom suddenly drags her out of London to spend the summer in the tiny English town where her family's from. I first discovered Casey’s writing with her Maeve Kerrigan series for adults, so when I learned that she had branched out into the YA genre, I naturally was quite excited to read this series too (so excited, in fact, I inadvertently purchased two copies of this same book!). She is another author that often makes me impatient as her novels are usually published in the UK a few months before they make their US appearance...

The main character and narrator, Jess Tennant, arrives in her mother’s hometown on the seaside on an extended holiday from life in London. At sixteen, Jess isn’t exactly thrilled at the prospect - further complicated by the recent death of her cousin, the daughter of her mother’s estranged identical twin sister - who looks hauntingly like Jess. Naturally, Jess is intrigued by her cousin and determined to untangle the mystery of her death.

Jess makes for a likable and sympathetic heroine. Unlike so many teens of the genre, she has a fair amount of common sense and a stubborn streak that I think readers old and young will recognize and relate with. But she’s hardly immune to teenage hormones, so it isn’t long before romantic tension creeps into this thriller. This romance seems mandatory for the genre, though, and the plot is surprisingly unpredictable (where the romance is not) and though the ending opens up room for a sequel, I am quite curious to see where the next book will go as this is a mystery that reaches a fully satisfying conclusion.

I really liked this authors adult series and was excited about this, but I found the main character to be nearly unbearable. Stretched the imagination that people were as taken with her as is written.

Love Jane Casey - if you like her you'll probably like Karin Slaughter and S.J. Bolton

You'll never suspect, who the suspect is...Great read, enjoyed the ending too.

I'm a huge fan of Jane Casey's books but didn't realise this was aimed at younger readers. I must confess though, near the end, I couldn't put it down!
Butius
Very exciting mystery-dark and interesting characters.

not as good as some of her other books
It was a very good story and held my attention until the last line. Recommended for the younger reader and maybe the more mature reader too!
