The Bloodstained Throne. Simon Beaufort is another pseudonym used by the author known as Susanna Gregory and the Geoffrey Mappestone series is very similar in tone. Unfortunately this means that nearly all the characters other than the main character (Geoffrey here, Matthew Bartholomew & Thomas Chaloner in the series written as Susanna Gregory) sound like fools. I found this to be a tedious read, something that I don't enjoy as it was not the amount of work it took to read, it was the amount of dialogue with little or no action on the part of the characters. Simply, I got bored with it and never finished it.

This book was a good read. It wasn't one os those cant put it down books, but it was entertaining and I enjoyed the historical details around it.

This is the fourth book of the series I have read and it's one of the better ones. The protagonist is very interesting. However, like the others in the series, there are simply too many murders. This leads to great complexity; at times I had a hard time figuring it all out. And the explanation as to who did what, and why, goes on and on an on for numerous pages. No nice neat explanations. Hence, by the time I finished the book, I would not have done well on a Quiz as to who did what, and why.

Why make the books so complicated? The master of the historical fiction genre, Edith Mary Pargeter -- writing as Ellis Peters -- did not need to do so and the Brother Cadfael series is renowned in this genre. I just discovered that series and Wow, fabulous books.

I wonder if the writing team who calls themselves Simon Beaufort figures that they can wow the reader with the numerous crimes. Frankly, really compelling writing would do that for me.

The Sir Geoffrey series is an enjoyable exploration of an underused medieval era (the years following the Norman Conquest, when Henry I was intriguing against his elder brother Robert).

However, I much prefer the books that are set in England, rather than the ones that take place in Jerusalem during the Crusades.
The best part of the entire series lies in Geoffrey's difficult relationships with his family, and I ended up wanting more of that and less of swordplay and adventurings.
