HOLMES AND WATSON

I've read quite a lot about Sherlock Holmes and his friend, including some biographies and "autobiographies." But no one has put all the details together the way Thompson has. She also fills in the gaps with solid historical research and very sharp deductions of what must have happened but is careful never to stray too far from what can be inferred from the stories. I really think that this book could be the basis for a good TV series on the early years of the two characters and an antidote to those which make ridiculous speculations about their lives.

June Thomson is a British mystery writer who has published about 18 novels concerning her own characters, and three pastiche collections of Sherlock Holmes short stories. What she seems to be doing here is getting another book out of her research and thoughts about the Holmes and Watson characters, as accumulated during the writing of the three short-story collections.
There is not much that is original here, and Thomson leans particularly heavily on D. Martin Dakin's SHERLOCK HOLMES COMMENTARY. What is good is Thomson's refusal to speculate wildly. She hews in a Fundamentalist way to the letter of the Canon; and, her main interest is the changing relations between Holmes and Watson, particularly as affected by Holmes' increasing deteriorating mental stability, and Watson's two marriages.
Thomson's two claims of originality lie in her identification of the person Watson disguised as the "King of Bohemia"--- an identification I don't buy at all; and, her identification of Watson's mysterious second wife, an identification I find brilliant and completely convincing.
This 2001 ... edition seems to be printed directly from the plates of the 1995 British edition, and the type shows quite a bit of damage, with a number of missing letters.
If you are a lover of the Canon, and of Holmes and Watson, you'll find much to ponder in this organized review of what few hints the Canon gives us on matters of the actual dates of various cases, and on the day-to-day life and relationship of the Great Detective and his faithful Boswell.

Not a novel - this is a theoretical analysis of the relationship between Holmes and Watson, based upon extensive research. It assumes the canon is a truthful retelling of real events.

It's definitely a must have for any fan of the canon stories and adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Wonderful way to set up a chronology of the canon from the beginning, Holmes and Watson's possible childhood influences to how they plausible perished under natural circumstances. Very Meta for any of you modern fans. It's just one great big book of META and definitely has plausible theories, explanations and solutions that derive from the canon material.

This isn't a mystery book. It's a discussion on the background and temperament and lives of the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The background is presented in a manner that makes one think there is little or no controversy regarding what is presented. For example, Dr. Watson is presented as an average doctor. While the actual cannon indicates his diagnostic skills might not have been "first in class", there's no evidence that he wasn't extremely effective in treatment or as a surgeon, and given that he is able to rapidly move up in his profession when he wants to despite his on again/ off again practice, there's some serious indications in the cannon that he actually was a very good doctor.
This book will appeal to those who want to know more about the history and personalities of these two characters, that doesn't conflict with the cannon and isn't full of dry explanations of why a conclusion has been reached. For those interested in reading stories using Doyles' characters and in the Doyle style, it isn't necessary..

Good read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who want to continue with reading about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson's adventures.
No stories in this book...just her theories about Holmes. I wish I could have given her a raspberry instead of one star for a rating.
