Statute of Limitations

Statute of Limitations. Chapter One. Estelle Reyes-Guzman scrunched down into the sofa, a large pillow clutched to her chest, face buried in the pillow’s soft corduroy to stifle her laughter. Across the room, her two small sons sat on the piano bench, elbow to elbow, creating a remarkable coordination of sound and story. He held a large children’s book open on his lap, and even though he couldn’t read the words, Carlos had heard the story so often that he knew it by heart, using the pictures as his cue. In the story, a sweaty, dejected javalina-the ubiquitous wild pig of the southwest-shuffled across the bleak desert at high noon.

No, n. don’t want you to do that, Francis said quickly. Pop a couple of those aspirin you just bought. That’s the best thing to do right now. Take a couple and then just sit down and relax, okay?

A statute of limitations is a law passed by a legislative body in a common law system to set the maximum time after an event within which legal proceedings may be initiated. When the time specified in a statute of limitations passes, a claim might no longer be filed or, if filed, may be subject to dismissal if the defense against that claim is raised that the claim is time-barred as having been filed after the statutory limitations period

"It's Christmas in Posadas County. Undersheriff Estelle Reyes-Guzman is settling down to a quiet evening with her family, until her doctor husband gets a call. It's from the retired chief-of-police Eduardo Martinez; he's at a nearby motel, having pains. Doctor Guzman responds, and then Estelle gets a call herself. Estelle and ex-Sheriff Bill Gastner, who was visiting the Guzman home at the time, arrive at the motel parking lot to find it's turned into the scene of a crime. It appears that Eduardo had an exchange with two men and then collapsed, the men taking off in his car. An out-of-town couple, the woman on the verge of giving birth, were the only ones to witness the encounter, but something seems off in their story. Havill triumphs once again, demonstrating his incredible talent for bringing out the characters and setting of this New Mexico community."

Excellent book definitely worth the reading. The mystery is unraveled carefully holding the reader’s attention to the very end! A must read for any person who enjoys mysteries.

My 89 year old mother is collecting all to reread.

She loves the author's storytelling, that the characters age, the description of the scenery, etc.

With Havill's usual style he has presented the law enforcement team of Posadas County in a colorful and exciting manner. His portrayal of the character's in this series is masterful and consistently interesting. Statute of Limitations is a good entre' into the world of Posadas county. Once you read it you will want to go back and read the rest of the series. It is that simple. It is that good.

Lots of loose ends left. Many inconsistencies. How did the murderer get that particular gun? How did he pull it off with no accomplice? Interesting basic plot, but leave a lot of unanswered questions.

Where has Steve Havill been all of my life. I picked up a used copy of the first book and I was HOOKED. What great stories. Police procedurals at their finest. Travis McGee in the southwest at an easy speed with moments of range and peril. Great stories. I now have read all of them; now what am I going to do?

Another great Bill Gastner book that has many twists and turns and keeps you guessing. I love the descriptions of New Mexico that go with the story telling; it makes the story real. I'm quite anxious to read the next book in the series to see if it picks up on the ending which kind of leaves the reader wondering how it all went.

The writing gets better and better in this series. It took me a while to get used to the new Under sheriff but this book really drew me in. I enjoyed it and ordered the next one right away.
I haven't found even 1 mediocre book in this series. This one might start out slower than usual, but when it picks up, look out. It's hard to step away from this series and the books have kept me up reading way past my bed time. What a absolute pleasure to read. Thank you Mr. Havill.
