In Parshall’s mystery novel, Dr. Rachel Goddard is all too familiar with the desire to start over. What did I know about her, really? She was the parent who’d raised me, but in many ways she was as much of a mystery as my dead father. My head ached escape when my rehabber friend Damian Rausch arrived to pick up both me and the red-shouldered hawk. The bird was less than thrilled about being grabbed just as he was settling down for the night, then stuck in a cat carrier and taken for a ride, and ultimately pinned on a cold steel table at the vet clinic. He protested the only way he could: he opened his beak and hissed

As soon as I finished book one in the Racel Goddard series, I purchased and read this one. For awhilr I thought that I had missed a book in between these 2 because there was a mention of an incident with Racel that was not part of book 1. I caught on finally when there was a description of the incident but I think it should have been covered earlier in this book. Overall, a good story line although Rachel did not seem like main character to me. I liked the introduction of Tom, Brandon and Holly and hope that they are in other books in the series. Lots of plot twists - very good read!

I loved the first book in the series. The second book was so far off from the first that I thought I was mixed up and had not bought the right book. I did buy the right one. But this second book was not about Rachel. It was about Tom. There were so many gaps from the first to the second which is disappointing. Book 1 has Rachel in love with Luke. Book 2 has no Luke in it and no explanation until midway when you get a brief hint. There is no clarity as to why Rachel relocated to this town until the book was almost over.

It seems like a whole story is missing. And this was definitely not a Rachel mystery. It is Tom's.

I loved Sandra Parshall's debut mystery (The Heat of the Moon), with its high suspense and leap-off-the-page characters. I loved Parshall's follow-up, Disturbing the Dead, even more.

This time around, Rachel Goddard's moved her veterinary practice to the mountains of southwestern Virginia, hoping to escape the violence she left behind. Fat chance. When Rachel befriends the niece of a woman whose decades-old skull is found on a remote mountaintop, she's up to her feisty neck in a decades-old murder investigation and sidestepping the advances of Tom Bridger, the sheriff's deputy in charge of the case.

Tom's a Melungeon -- and a special feature of this book is a look inside that community, a racially mixed people of Appalachia who are "tri-racial isolates" -- a mixture of white, Native American, and black.

Disturbing the Dead has a complex plot, fascinating characters, plus lots of suspense and lots of heart.

Enough twist and turns in this I had to go back to review who was who. I will read the next one, I actually hope it not so curvy. Parshall must have had to do a family tree to remember. LOL. For a moment I wondered if Holly was going to turn out to be Amy's daughter. I would recommend anyone to read the book. When you do pay attention, and see if you pick up any clues I missed.

Following along from the first Rachel Goddard mystery but also a standalone book, this is another engrossing read. Rebuilding her life after previous suffering, Rachel becomes involved in another mystery in a small town in Southern Virginia. A great story with a tight plot.

Good but not as good as her first book. Much more a story of Tom (a new character she introduces) than Rachel. You do need to read her first novel before this one so you have some background information.
This is the second one of this series I've read.
I like how there are some twists in each story to keep you guessing. So many possibilities as to what happened but not so much as to lose you.
I plan on reading the next one.
