Due to its versatility, clustering is applied in almost all scientific fields, like economics and marketing, astronomy, archeology, and many others. In the field of bioinformatics, cluster analyses are used, for example, for the analysis of microarry data, cancer subtyping, protein homology detection, and many more. This idea might be appropriate for some applications but can be very misleading for others.

Probability has a dual aspect: on the one hand the likelihood of hypotheses given the evidence for them, and on the other hand the behavior of stochastic processes such as the throwing of dice or coins

Probability has a dual aspect: on the one hand the likelihood of hypotheses given the evidence for them, and on the other hand the behavior of stochastic processes such as the throwing of dice or coins. The study of the former is historically older in, for example, the law of evidence, while the mathematical treatment of dice began with the work of Cardano, Pascal and Fermat between the 16th and 17th century.

More recently, the fallout of Enron, WorldCom, and similar fiascos must now give pause to those who take the efficient market–based formula for "fair prices" (especially in options and derivatives) as rigid laws

In Markets in History leading economic historians present the results of their research on the scope of markets in economies past and present, ranging from English open fields in the age of Chaucer to racial discrimination in the age of Martin Luther King, Jr. All of these studies illustrate the rewards that are gained by blending the economist's use of analytical and statistical techniques with the historian's careful attention to reconstructing the past through the use of a variety of types of evidence. Markets in History will be of interest to all social scientists for its demonstration of the value of economic theory and econometrics in helping to understand the causes of changing allocations of resources and their consequences for economies and societies.
