I'm a student in the Medical Coding program at my local college. Some of my class instructors have recommended that we find ourselves a good medical dictionary. After some research, and asking established coders what they prefer in a med. dictionary I settled on this Mosby's Medical Dictionary.

Cursory Observation: The dictionary is bound with a hardcover and the pages are shiny, sleek, and nicely printed. I noted the heaviness of the book as well as the comprehensive definitions and pictorials. It is about 3.5" thick. Elsevier is the publisher of this dictionary as well as the publisher of some of my coding textbooks. I felt comfortable with using this dictionary because of this.

Recommendation: Yes, I can recommend this dictionary to fellow Medical Coding Students. It's a beautiful, quality book for the price. It's comprehensive enough to get you through assignments that require more research into understanding what a condition is for the purpose of coding it.

This dictionary is everything!!!!! One of my best nursing school purchases. You won't regret purchasing it either. Has good definitions with good pictures in color.

Excellent book. I looked up one word in here; before purchasing this book. Gynecamastia. It was listed. I purhcased the book. No regrets, and it's in color.

Qumen

This is a slight cross between textbook and dictionary. I mean, it IS a dictionary, but it also offers good illustrations/photos as well as diagrams. Pretty easy to understand and basically chock full of terms. A little over 1.5" thickness. Definitely would recommend this to a student going into the medical field in any capacity (administrative, nursing, doctor, lab tech, etc).

Discovered it in a previous version when I was a student. Just bought this version for the "love" of it and to have around the house to answer questions in useful detail. Superb color illustrations throughout. Thorough, readable text. This'll be a lifetime "keeper".

We use this when we're confused about medical terms. Started using it when our preemie daughter was born and doctors used mitigated speech when speaking about her medical condition. "Your daughter has acute broncho-pulmonary dysplasia, which affects her alveoli and blah blah blah."

Broncho-pulmonary dysplasia meant nothing to me until I we looked it up. Get a dictionary. Get informed. Ask good questions.

It's got a lot of images and explanations. My wife wanted a medical dictionary, but WOW some of these images are not for the faint at heart. It's a medical book and it doesn't pull any punches. Good Ref book if you need one for sure. Just be advised, some of these images are not pretty (what sickness, injury is) so be prepared, but worth the cash if you need this type reference manual.

I needed this dictionary for a simple coding class that I am taking, but am finding it very interesting and helpful as well in explaining the details of medical illnesses and diagnoses for complications that occur during operations, etc. I am very pleased with this book. The graphics are very intense, so if you have a sensitive stomach, I wouldn't suggest getting it, but I've been in the medical field for 20+ years, so am fascinated by it. Plus, what haven't you seen on TV already, right? LOL Good luck to those of you looking for for a dictionary, but if you want something detailed and structured, this is the book for you!
