One rather disappointing aspect of this otherwise excellent book is the small amount of space devoted to the choroid plexus and the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Dr Sharma’s work over 30 years on the blood-brain barrier and brain edema won him the US Neurosurgeon Dr Anthony Marmarou Award (2011) by the International Brain Edema Society at their 15th Congress in Tokyo, Japan, November 2011. On his works on Blood–brain barrier in hypertension and diabetes together with Romanian colleagues, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iuliu Hatieganu, Cluj-Napoca, Romania awarded Dr. Sharma with Honorary Doctorate of Medical Sciences in 2009.

FULL DISCLOSURE--I work closely with several of the contributing authors in this book.

This book has been an indispensible resource in the preparation of my doctoral dissertation, which is on the blood-brain barrier. I would heartily recommend it to anyone interested in the field at the graduate student level or higher. The treatment of some subjects is a little uneven, but that is to be expected in a book that covers so much ground--from molecular biology and biophysics of tight junction proteins to clinical aspects of the BBB--in a single volume. The illustrations are attractive and clear, and most of the chapters are very well-written.

Overall, an excellent reference for researchers in the BBB field, and a great introduction to many aspects of the field for scientists or clinicians wanting to know more about it.
