This text seeks to sensitize readers to the rationale of play and leisure experiences for children with various disabilities and to illustrate how they and others can learn from their experiences. This new edition reviews new ways that promote integrated activities within the community and home and demonstrates to practitioners and parents how they can take a more active role in strengthening the opportunities. Initial chapters provide a basic over view of the field of therapeutic recreation; present a unique perspective on programming in therapeutic recreation; and discuss the purpose, nature, and available resources for assessing the needs of exceptional children. Following chapters address service delivery and provide significant information about related therapies, parental involvement, therapeutic recreation within the educational system, and the principles of leisure guidance. New chapters discuss statutes and public laws that pertain to children with disabilities, understanding the quality of life in children. and an expanded look at animal-assisted and horticultural therapy. The reader will find that this volume answers many of the concerns that recreators, educators, child life specialists, social workers, and parents have when providing or attempting to locate recreation services for children with disabilities.
