Having read books on bidding by such luminaries as Kaplan, Karpin, Root, Reese, Sheinwold I wished to acquaint myself with modern conventions (when I stopped playing, Roman/Neapolitan/Schenken Big Club systems had become the rage). In looking over the book this is my view relative to what I expected. Depending on your need, you may decide differently.

The book is not thematically organized nor provides sufficient insight on philosophy and strategy. It is formatted in a cookbook style with detailed tactics ... 'if this, do this'. It lacks satisfactory discussion of reasons ... conditions, assumptions, consequences, unintended consequences. It is a weak substitute for Reese and Dormer or Root's books however, 3 stars because someone might find it useful.

Truscott also wrote a survey of bidding systems years ago that was actually more useful if someone wishes to survey methods. Unfortunately, it is old and I saw nothing recent to replace it.

When learning to play bridge you soon realize that there are several conventions that you would like to learn. This is probably the best book available. Escpecially it makes it possible for you to customize your own conventions depending on how complicated conventions you can remember.
