These yearbooks are extremely effective in opening preparation. The approach to variations are outstanding and a time tested method.

Each article has a very good IM or GM breaking down the main ideas in text before giving a series of games that underline the points made. A lot like a lecture or snapshot followed by homework. Going through the games with a chess set really works and it sticks with you.

I remember going through a queen sacrifice line in the Samisch King's Indian. I went through most of the games and it stuck with me. Not just through the tournament but for five or six years after the tournament. I even had the move orders down.

If you have a working knowledge of a line and are looking for some good and quick fixes, the yearbook is superbly set up to give you that capability. As a devotee of a number of lines, this was and still is very helpful.

That said, the approach has its limitations. If you know little or nothing about the opening, you really should get a relevant opening book. If you want a comprehensive overview, there is no substitute for getting an exhaustive book collection in the relevant opening and going through the books.

But if you have an MCO grasp of the line and want to go through a particular angle in the opening variation, you could do worse by getting a yearbook.

The yearbook publication by New in Chess reached 100! Issues this month. As expected for this high quality publisher, the 100 edition of this popular opening survey is full of good articles ( and readers contributions too). No matter what part of chess you enjoy most (OTB play, online correspondence or teaching) you will find something valuable in this issue. For the book lovers the review section by Glen Flear has a top 20 book list that may provide the info about what book you should buy in the future or recommend to your friends.

I enjoyed Kasparov article on the Spanish Zaitsev, but over all a contribution by a reader showing chess games reaching the same position at move 42! . In this season you can have both "light " articles to read next to the fire place or heavy theoretical analsis on the Sicilian as preparation for you nex tournament. The choice is yours...
