Rauschenberg Posters book.

Robert Rauschenberg was drawn to poster design throughout his career, viewing the medium as a unique opportunity to collaborate with printmakers and reach a larger audience. Rauschenberg’s posters are rarely legible at first glance and require repeat viewing to uncover their many hidden symbols and details. Composed of layered images and text, Rauschenberg’s first poster was a black-and-white advertisement for his first retrospective at the Jewish Museum in 1963, and he continued to create exhibition posters throughout his life.

Rauschenberg designed Ace Venice USA to announce his exhibition, New Paintings: Spreads and Scales, on view at Flow Ace Gallery in Venice from November 20, 1977 through December 14, 1977.

Since 1963 Robert Rauschenberg has used the medium of poster art to announce his own exhibitions, advertize concerts and dance productions, and to address social and political issues, such as the environment, apartheid and international understanding. In all he has produced a body of some 140 posters. This publication unites 60 of the artist's finest works, from all phases of his stylistic development. One of the pioneers and leading exponents of Pop Art, Robert Rauschenberg has experimented with and often blurred the boundaries between a variety of media such as painting, object art, photography and print. His mature poster work from the 1970s onwards displays a dynamic technique of composition and plays with several levels of meaning, often addressing the subject in a surprising, oblique manner. Rauschenberg employs a collage principle that lends an unusual irony to everyday images and photographs.

I was hesitant to order this because it is listed as being the "German Edition" and I can't read German. However, there were plenty being offered here used, and got a copy for just a few bucks. I figured at worst, I would just look at the pictures. The few pages of text are bi-lingual, so German on one side and the corresponding English on the other side of the page. Not only that, but great full-color reproductions of 67 posters, an informative introduction, timeline, and even a few smaller non-poster reproductions. Great for anybody interested in posters, Rauschenberg, communication theory, or graphic design. ISBN 3-7913-2698-8.

Addressing the Rauschenberg posters, I had expected more on the earlier years, particularly the civil rights posters and processes, and I was disappointed. But that not withstanding, you will find much rich material and insights which make this books worth owning.
