The Young Christian's Guide to Vocational Filmmaking

Like the Berlin Wall, the seemingly impenetrable colossus of Hollywood, with its enslaving influence on American culture, will someday come crashing down, destroyed by inexpensive technologies, new distribution methods, and a rising tide of independent filmmakers. All of these factors represent unprecedented opportunities for innovative Christian visionaries who are willing to take every thought captive through a presuppositionally biblical approach to making films outside the Hollywood system.

In this groundbreaking book, experienced cinematographer, writer, and animator Isaac Botkin prepares Christians for successful Christ-honoring leadership as writers, directors, and producers. Botkin has worked as both a Hollywood outsider and an insider, and is a leading proponent of a new independent film industry. In Outside Hollywood, he smashes the myth of methodological and cultural neutrality and offers a paradigm for developing a family-friendly approach to this hugely important field of cultural influence.

Readers will benefit from his insights on the proper training and qualifications and the history and future of the Hollywood industry, as well as the key to courageous script writing, and the responsibilities of professional directing. Several appendices explain ways to get the most out of modern equipment, how to avoid the common mistakes of new filmmakers, and more.

This is a really informative and, in ways, invaluable resource. Mr. Botkin breaks down films to an art and informs why the various elements of the film or scene were good or bad. The information he provides on Hollywood, is itself, enlightening. I bought this book on impulse a few days before leaving for the San Antonio Independent Christian Film Academy, in which Mr. Botkin was a speaker. I really felt like this made a great companion for the film academy and I do not regret buying it. If you are an up-and-coming Christian filmmaker or someone interested in the Christian film movement, do yourself a favor and buy it.

This Author has a mix up between the terms "Christian" and "Conservative" I knew when he started talking about not making Businessmen the villain what his true agenda was if you want to make horrendous films that pander to a Christian audience (Like God is Not Dead) then this is the book for you....

If you are looking for an amusing volume dedicated to glorifying the glitz and glam of Hollywood, or a stodgy tome bent on exploring outdated concepts in the most dreary way possible, then Isaac Botkin's witty, timely, thorough, and astute "Outside Hollywood" might not be the book for you.

This book is a history lesson, a film class, and an apt call to arms rolled into one clever, comprehensible, and sensible package. Botkin is a consummate filmmaker who has the experience (both technological and theological) to encourage Christian filmmakers to take initiative and strive to create a new, God-honoring, Christ-exalting brand of films whose goal is to do more than entertain -he knows, and you'll know, that this is a goal that can only be achieved outside Hollywood.
