The origin of the Darwin Awards can be traced back to posts on Usenet group discussions as early as 1985. An early post, on August 7, 1985, describes the awards as being, "given posthumously to people who have made the supreme sacrifice to keep their genes out of our pool. The Darwin Awards 3: Survival of the Fittest. New York City: Plume.

The Darwin Awards has the pedigree to become the gift book of choice for holidays & the first must-have humor title of the twenty-first century. Named in honor of Charles Darwin, the father of evolution, the Darwin Awards commemorate those who improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it, showing us just how uncommon common sense can be. Meet the absentminded terrorist who opens a mail bomb returned to him for insufficient postage. Marvel at the thief who steals electrical wires without shutting off the current.

The Darwin Awards create a reason to live for myself

The Darwin Awards create a reason to live for myself. Knowing that there are people out there to lessen competition in life just pleases me. The human race is made up of individuals who are below average (Darwin Awards), average (Honorable Mentions), and above average (those who can write books about these kind of things). For all of those who think that these stories are boring to read by oneself, you should do the following when you are with friends, on a long flight or ride in the car with family, et. Take turns passing the book around and reading stories

The hilarious New York Times bestselling phenomenon—more than 1.5 million copies sold! Honoring those who improve our gene pool by inadvertently removing themselves fromit, The Darwin Awards III includes more than one hundred brand new, hilariously macabre mishaps and misadventures.

From a sheriff who inadvertently shot himself twice, to the insurance defrauder who amputated his leg with a chainsaw; from a farmer who avoided bee stings by sealing his head in a plastic bag to the man crushed by the branch he just trimmed, The Darwin Awards III proves again that when it comes to stupidity, no species does it like we do.

Featuring scientific and safety discussions and filled with illustrations depicting inspiring examples of evolution in action, The Darwin Awards III shows once more how uncommon common sense still is.

I loved the first edition of the Darwin Awards, but was a little disappointed by the second edition. The third edition continues the trend. I realize it may be tough to find enough stupid dead people that can be funny, but some of the stories should have never made the cut.
There are a set of rules for being awarded a Darwin Award. I have difficulty understanding how one particular entry made the book as a winner based on the standard. Did somebody forget to proofread?
While I liked the "not a Darwin Award" Chapter in the second edition, none of the stories were as entertaining this time.
It is my hope that this is the last edition of the Darwin will be the last or a long time passes between the third and fourth books. This way some really funny material can be collected.
This is not our first Darwin Awards CD. Never fails to entertain.
The Darwin Awards are hilarious. If you're looking for a gift for someone who likes a good laugh and isn't up-tight, then definitely purchase this book. I have been laughing at it for at least a decade now.
Oh yeah, love reading about stupid people, these books are treasures.
