I first found this book at my local library, I was checking it out so often I had to buy it. Although country isn't my style I found the basic idea behind the techniques very helpful. There are many full color photographs and at the end there is a chapter on putting together a house in only a few days. I found that the last chapter and the first chapter were the most helpful, but the entire book is great.

This is another of the Mary Emmerling books I love so much that I bought my own copy after checking it out of the library numerous times. Like her other books, there are lots of pictures to inspire the home decorator.

A wonderful book for someone setting up a home or wanting to refresh the home they are in.

I gave this book four stars because it accomplishes the two things that I ask of a decorating book; it inspires and it educates. The production quality is excellent. Gorgeous photos with lots of helpful captions in a format that makes sense. The book is arranged by length of the project, which is very handy and a life saver for those of us who tend to bite off more than we can chew.

The last part of the book chronicles the author setting up a new home. This section gives the book a whole new dimension. Here the reader evolves from admirer to participant; trying ideas, following advice, and hopefully moving into their new space more confident and organized. This section is genius - I practically put it on flash cards to prepare for my move.

A couple of notes - this is not of book for the minimalist or someone who loves modern or formal decor - this is country decorating through and through. There is also a lot of STUFF in Ms. Emmerling's decorating - plates, baskets, crosses, whatever. This is decorating for accumulators. This is also a book more about staging and accessorizing as opposed to interior decorating. Room layouts, drapery styles, and color schemes are not covered. Also, there is a source list but given the years since publication this section might not be as handy as it once was.

Every time I want to redecorate, renovate, or rearrange a room I pull this book off the shelves.

I bought this book in the late 1990's.

I still browse through it today, and this book does hold up,even now.

The chapters are easily categorized by styles & ideas. The photos are wonderful!

If you're familiar with COUNTRY HOME MAGAZINE or Mary Emmerling's style, then you'll like the format & ideas in this book.

Somebody else described the style of this book as "rustic", and I agree.

NOTE: If you're expecting "shabby chic" or "minimalist" country style, then this book is not for you.

But , if you love the "naturally" rustic look of the older country styles, then you'll love this book
