The more space the more stuff you think you need.

I have been reading a lot of these complete idiot’s guide series of books lately. I just finished reading this excellent 290 page soft cover book (The complete idiot’s guide to simple living by Georgene Lockwood) which I purchased for a bargain price on Amazon.

All our lives we collect things but when you reach your senior years you come to realize that the less things you have the more enjoyable and stress free your life can be. This very informative book is very helpful for me personally. It has made me more motivated to start giving away or throwing way more clutter from my life.

This book is organized into five parts. Part one explains about “simple living.” Part two (Your money IS your life!) focuses on how to best manage your money and how to get by with less. Part three (Simple living basics: food, clothing, and shelter) covers the specifics of getting along with just the basics of living free of stress. Part four explores the relationship of family, friends, and community when trying to simplify your life. The final part goes into the politics of paring down, new directions in education, living with natural order and what is rich? Do not pass over the appendix sections because they also give some great resources.

If you are seeking a more stress free and meaningful simple life, this is a must book to read. It has valuable tips and ideas to help you manage your life more effectively. A great read.

I got it because the reviews were so good. And they were right. At first I thought it was another one of those For Dummies books (which in all reality make things more complicated than need be), but thankfully it's not. It's not about simplifying your life in one particular way, instead, it's about simplifying your life in anyway you want. There were things about my life I wasn't even worried about dealing with but after reading this book I've found that those things played a major role in how I actually wanted to simplify my life. Plus, it's not too boring ;)

I am a fan of the "Idiot" books. But this provides a whole lot more than just an overview. It touches on the many facets of Simplicity and provides tactical, tangible actions.
I love the idiot books. I have over a dozen of them. This one;however, is my least favorite. I was hoping for a some understanding of cultural perspectives about the importance of living simply. I was hoping for a book that would serve as a guide towards "appreciation" and "contentment" in Western society. I was hoping for a sociological perspective of how cultures, subcultures, and people have successfully obtained satisfaction without excess want. I was hoping for a foundation of philosophical perspectives of those who have mastered living simply in mind and deeds (whether you are a millionaire or pennyless.) This book is little more than a "how to" book on Penny Pinching. If you feel "living simply" means "penny pinching", then buy this book. For me, living simply has little to do with money, and more to do with mind, body, and soul. To me, "simple living" is about appreciation, satisfaction, and contentment... regardless of your financial situation. To the author of this book "simple Living" means penny pinching advice, such as "drive 55 mph on the interstate to save on gas money" .Perhaps my real problem with this book is the misguided title. An appropriate title would be "A Complete Idiots Guide to Penny Pinching".
