In addition to books about Southern cities (Charleston Style, etc), I've written books about aspects of Southern design (cottages, sophisticated cosmopolitan homes), co-authored with leading Southern architects and designers, and strayed as far afield as Morocco and Maine. Adding photography into the mix has brought me even closer to the things I love.

Book Description From its earliest days as a burgeoning colonial port blending European, Caribbean, and Asian influences, Charleston has maintained a unique brand of southern cosmopolitanism.

The Southern Cosmopolitan looks at the tradition of style shaping the South’s architecture and interior design. A selection of luxurious houses from Charleston, Savannah, New Orleans, Atlanta, Natchez, Georgetown, and Alexandria celebrates the sophisticated side of southern style with a mix of modern art, antiques, and exotic textiles. Featured in tantalizing color photographs are select residences decorated by leading southern tastemakers, including Thomas Jayne, Amelia Handegan, Nancy Braithewaite, and Hal Williamson. An immaculately restored mansion in Natchez and a collector’s treasure trove in Alexandria reveal the South’s love affair with historic European and American architecture, art, and antiques. A classic re-do of a Colonial Revival home in Georgetown and a modern Atlanta condominium decorated with French antiques and contemporary art showcase the southern blend of old and new. A Greek Revival house filled with exotic textiles in Charleston and an Italianate townhouse in Savannah display the South’s fascination with foreign and exotic decorative objects. A perfect summary of southern taste for those charmed by both the grandeur and intimate details that make these homes so hospitable.

Most people think of the South as being rural, with white-column plantation-style houses. But in places like New Orleans and Charleston, an urban sensibility mixes with traditional Southern appreciation for European antiques. The style is distinctive, and you won't see it anywhere in many decor books, except for the other must-have, Big, Easy Style.

I recommend both books for anyone who likes or has inherited antique furniture, but still wants to have chic and worldly interiors.

Very interesting book on areas in the south. Having recently toured Charleston, SC the book brought back wonderful memories. I love the mix of old and new to enhance the décor.

I love the South, and I love decorating books. This is fun to thumb through and looks good on my coffee table.

I honestly expected more from this book. I find inspiration from interior design books and this one was lacking for me.

I purchased this book to learn more about the home featured on the cover. This home was originally featured in a House Beautiful magazine, last year, and has been my design inspiration. I love a casually elegant home that isn't too overly studied, and the cover home is just that. The rest of the homes in the book aren't. But, I'm sure there's something in this book for anyone loving great design.

Southern style is for those of us who love elegance, graciousness, timeless decor, classic details and historical charm. Those aren't easily found in all design books, and now that Southern Accents magazine is no longer being published will be even more difficult to find examples of. I enjoyed seeing up-to-date examples of Southern decor and Southern designers in this lovely book which had a number of unique homes and rooms representative of Southern style. Some were classic historical rooms and some successfully combined more modern elements with historical design features. If you love elegant and gracious interior design, you should enjoy this book on the latest in cosmopolitan and sophisticated southern style.
so many interior design books on the market....but this one is truly special!!!!!....very inspiring, each beautiful page makes me want to redecorate my entire house....and isn't that what these books are for?
