At the same time The Jewel Garden is the story of a creative partnership that has weathered the greatest storm, and a testament to the healing powers of the soil. Monty Don has always been candid about the garden's role in helping him to pull back from the abyss of depression; The Jewel Garden elaborates on this much further.

In Monty Don’s case there was never any real doubt what that way would be. He states it simply, in two words: Earth heals. Profusely illustrated throughout with glorious full colour photographs, The Jewel Garden is one of those books that refuses to be pigeon-holed. Part auto-biography, part ‘how to’ book, part gardening calendar it is above all a testament to the power of love, determination and sheer bloody-mindedness and a timely reminder that whatever happened in the past and whatever lies in wait in the future, the only place we can live is in the present and that

Written in an optimistic, autobiographical vein, Monty and Sarah's story is truly an exploration of what it means to be a gardener. Incidentally, the book covers all the Dons' garden, but the 'Jewel Garden' itself is a part of it that is planted with particularly vibrant, vivid, jewel-like plants. This area more than any other draws on the years they spent in the fashion business. With specially commissioned photography by the renowned garden photographer Nicola Browne, this book will be a jewel-like object in its own right.

I'm a fan of the British program Gardeners' World, hosted by Monty Don. Each episode offers wonderful tips any gardener can use, even one in the Santa Cruz mountains! I've enjoyed Monty Don's garden, tips and his down-to-earth style, so much so that I wanted to learn more.

A search revealed several books, one of which is The Jewel Garden, a journal written by both Monty and his wife Sarah. Subtitled A Story of Despair and Redemption, it tells about their meeting at Cambridge, their first successful jewelry design company and devastating financial reverses. Finally, it tells about their love of gardening, their devotion to each other and how these loves order their lives. The trade paperback has a number of lovely photos showing the Dons in their London days and the transformation of an old listed Herefordshire house on two acres into one of the country's amazing gardens.

The Dons are self-taught gardeners: they grow what they like with a preference for an informal look and the inclusion of vegetables that find their way to the table.

From Sarah: "Over the years life has become more comfortable and the happiest time that we spend together is in the garden. The energy has now gone from making it to sustaining its rhythm."

From Monty: "We have made this garden together; there is nothing in it that is not a result of that partnership. From the mess and joy of our past and present we have created a place that is intensely personal, yet lives quite separately from us. It is this precious thing that we are making out of life's muddle."

The above two observations epitomize the substance of this delightful memoir. If you love gardening, you will thoroughly enjoy The Jewel Garden by Monty and Sarah Don.

Living in Pennsylvania U.S.A...I can only dream about a beautiful garden in the English countryside....This book let me do a little more than that..It gave me a personal peek into not only how the garden was made and is cared for but who the people who made it really are. I totally enjoyed this read.....and came away so inspired. I doubt that I would ever attempt to make such an involved garden, but there were so many helpful hints as to good plants to use and how to start a hedge from cuttings, how they plant their sweetpeas etc. etc......But it was the authors personal stories about how they came to make their garden after some challenging life twists, that raised this book a notch above your usual garden read.

I usually don't reread a book, but now I am on my fourth time rereading this book...Sarah and Montague have shared with the reader portions of their journey in this lifetime and their thread connecting it all... At first read, I did have some confusion as to the differentiation between the typeset and recognizing which one of them was commenting, and then diary entries were included, however, I eventually caught on to their rhythm...and the rhythm of the seasons...well done!

I am an avid gardener and have been watching Monty Don's gardening programs for a few years now. I really REALLY enjoyed this book. It is honest, entertaining and enlightening. The first part of the book is mostly about the person and how he and his wife got started. The second part of the book is far more gardening related with meticulous details about the plants that Monty and Sarah have in their gardens. It is a quick and engaging read. I would recommend it to anyone who knows of Monty Don or is interested in a great story about a great gardener.

I'm a Monty Don fan and enjoyed reading about the garden I've watched on the gardening shows.

What can I say? Monty Don is the gardener's guru. I watched his BBC gardeners world on TV and moaned that every episode was too short!! Now that I own his books I am in gardener's heaven even though I live in the opposite hemisphere. He is real. I feel is gardening is achievable for the non purist gardener like me. Every gardener should own his books. This one is a great read, full of information and ideas and keeps one heartened about things that can and do go wrong. A most enjoyable book.

Nice to meet the man behind the TV presenter. A real person who's is open for the world to know the good and bad. Result showing, the importance of knowing what works for you, and no matter what challenges we face in life, be true to yourself and family.
The story is good. It's a nice insight into one of my favorite TV personalities - and no mistake about it - he is an outstanding host. However, I don't like the "his and her's" diary style, the constant back and forth. Worth a read, but even as an avid gardener my eyes kind of glazed over as I got into the garden diary of the year at Longmeadow. Easily skimmed, though.
