Both pursuits keep me busy, and with what is left of my downtime, I care for my one-half acre home landscape in Alpine. The property has several hundred species of plants, contained in a large cactus and succulent garden, a fruit and vegetable garden, and several separate themed garden rooms with dozens of California natives mixed with hundreds of other plant species. My home is located where chaparral and oak woodland meet.

A plantsman is an enthusiastic and knowledgeable gardener (amateur or professional), nurseryman or nurserywoman. Plantsman" can refer to a male or female person, though the terms plantswoman, or even plantsperson, are sometimes used. The word is sometimes said to be synonymous with "botanist" or "horticulturist", but that would indicate a professional involvement, whereas "plantsman" reflects an attitude to (and perhaps even an obsession with) plants.

Gardening books encompass a variety of subjects from garden design, vegetable gardens, perennial gardens, to shade gardens. Every plant genus or category of plants may also be covered including roses, clematis, bulbs, hellebores, and hydrangeas

Nature's strangest plants. Herb-harvesting trespassers. Rattlesnakes curled in planter beds. Stoners fumbling with hydroponic systems. Semi-tame backyard buzzards. And the fire of the century. This is not a typical garden book. Plantsman: Notes from a California Garden Designer follows avid plant collector and landscaper Steve Harbour through a year of gardening exploits, beginning in early January when he gardens in shorts and a tee-shirt and ending in December as he empties his torched greenhouse after a tragic wildfire. In between, Harbour: Designs entire gardens without a preconceived plan. Discovers metal bands cutting into one of California's rarest plants. Frightens mountain lions. Discovers an endangered plant species sprouting in his garden. Tours a hippie garden. Deliberates the fate of a beautiful garden after its creator dies. Digs moats to drown gophers. Creates an eclectic landscape bordering a wilderness area. Advises a lost family in the mountains. They don't follow his advice. Ruminates on the Secret Life of Plants. Avoids police barricades to learn the fate of his fire-ravaged home. Struggles to outwit homeowners' associations. Watches a hawk swoop out of the sky to devour a favorite blue jay. And basks in the perfect days of each season. Through it all, Harbour discusses Mediterranean gardens, desert landscape design, native plants, garden exhibits, good plants, problem plants, roses, shopping nurseries for bargains, gaining inspiration from nature, gardening in each season, creating wildlife habitats, choosing landscape professionals, and landscaping in fire country. Plantsman reads like a good travel narrative while offering pages of expert gardening advice. The adventure begins just outside the back door.

Do you or have you ever imagined designing a landscape or growing plants? If landscaping and gardening is an avocation, have you thought about going professional? Perhaps you just do it in your spare time, growing things to your liking. I could go on and on but the "Plantsman" can go a longer way for any kind of person who likes getting their hands in the soil or designing their yards or the yards of others with plants as the focus or as enhancers.

Mr. Harbour gives you this and more, and I would recommend it to amateurs and professionals alike. Well written, this year-in-the-life will give you an inside view of landscaping design as a profession, replete with plant references, both in name and description, plus their Latin designations. Also interesting is how he deals with flaky contractors, suppliers and fickle customers. He takes you on a long journey over time--what made him who he is in outlook, from rescuing his grandmother's rare plants to those he discovered in the area or on the job. Expect some heavy reflection, too, along with doses of humor as well.

One of the reviewers wrote that Mr. Harbour had "an encyclopedic knowledge of plants and an artist's eye for design and detail." Well, that's just the beginning. Even if you don't care about plants, especially the succulents he loves, his prose will make "Plantsman" a page turner. I'm sure glad I read it.

When I began reading Plantsman, I expected to learn all about California plants and gardens. Having lived only a short time in the state, I was eager to know the names and temperament of the gorgeous plants and flowering trees I saw in front yards and parks on my daily walks.

What I did not expect was an even flow of lively prose that would grip me like a best-selling work of fiction. Plantsman is an entertaining page-turner as well as an encyclopedia of plant life. Its master-gardener tips will help you transform your humble plot into a luxuriant, esthetically charming, and environmentally-friendly garden, be it desert, inland, or coastal. You are seduced by the striking hues of Red Columbus, Leopard Lily, Mexican Primrose, Pink Spice and a myriad other plants, and dizzied by the scent of plants like Box Honeysuckle and Peppermint Scented Geranium.

In an engaging poetic style peppered with bursts of wonder and excitement, Harbour takes us on an unforgettable journey through the gardens of his life. We meet his grandmother, discover the inspiration for his first love; we hike through desert canyons in 90 degree heat with his family, gasp in the encounter with a mountain lion, ponder the secret lives of plants, learn how to exterminate gophers, and welcome anew each magnificent season.

Plantsman will delight both garden lovers and general readers.

Gardening guru Steve Harbour's account of a year in the life of a garden designer springs from fertile ground as the seasons unfold. With an encyclopedic knowledge of plants and an artist's eye for design and detail, Harbour escorts the reader on a grand tour of landscape masterpieces in the making as the year buds and then blooms. Harbour's humor and humanity color his perspective as he moves through an impressive array of garden projects.

Which is not to suggest that the year is without its challenges. In a compelling chronicle of frustrations with fickle clients, unreliable contractors, and the demands of design competitions, the author recounts his adventures in a wry, insightful and moving style. The path that Harbour treads is beset with garden pests, inept cannabis cultivators, a bureaucratic homeowners association, and a first-hand and moving account of a devastating wildfire that nearly consumes Harbour's home.

For the green-thumbed aficionado or the aspiring beginner, Harbour's gentle and well-conceived guide traces the impulse to create and coax order and beauty from the world around us. Along the way we witness the wonder and beauty of a life lived among a landscape of the author's own making. It is a journey too important to miss. A deep-rooted and flourishing floral find.

Harbour is a plantsman in the true sense and let's the reader into a year of his life. Whether it be as a designer, a collector, or just a home gardener; Harbour delights with entertaining and funny tails about life in Southern California as a plant person.

Whether it was the chapter about the snake, the mountain lion, or the fire; I kept the pages turning and enjoyed it from cover to cover. Looking forward to the next one from this author.
