Diane Maurer-Mathison takes collage and other altered art processes seriously as art. None of this -images-together stuff you get in some collage guides - not that there's anything wrong with that approach

Diane Maurer-Mathison takes collage and other altered art processes seriously as art. None of this -images-together stuff you get in some collage guides - not that there's anything wrong with that approach. In fact, if I have any criticism of this book, it is that she does make the topic seem technically challenging in a way that could well be discouraging to a beginner

Well, many collage and altered art makers use found materials to create their works of art. Scraps of paper, old postcards . Some of the projects in this book are whimsical while others are clever and fun like a Voodoo Doll project.

Well, many collage and altered art makers use found materials to create their works of art. Scraps of paper, old postcards, stamps, stickers, ribbon, fabric scraps and whatever else they find and put it all together to create works of art. And that’s green to me. Most of the projects and works of art displayed in Collage, Altered Art and Assemblage all have a vintage feel that really appeals to m.

Let Collage, Assemblage, and Altered Art lead the way to a whole new way of creating collage! Artist and author Diane Maurer-Mathison begins the book with an overview of collage, including history, tools, and techniques, plus materials and principles of color and design. Then it’s on to the collage projects, from traditional ue creations to photomontage to mixed media to digital collage. Next comes assemblage, with three-dimensional objects added to the collage mix to produce memory and shadow boxes, shrines, art dolls, jewelry, and sculpture.

Collage page with zipper - great for altered book pages too. Not a bad book, but the illustrations and photos of projects fall far below the quality and fun factor of other top books on collage and assemblage. Then cover is great and really pulls you in, and there are adequate instructions for various projects, but I would recommend getting this from the library first and seeing what you think. Definitely not for the experienced collage or assemblage artist, but for beginners looking for guidance and ideas. I would also recommend googling on the internet for photos and websites on these topics (also youtube) to see the real first-rate stuff.

This is a terrific book. Although published in 2007, it seems very current with today's trends of mixed-media, altered art, and assemblage using found and recycled (up-cycled) materials. It's a mix of discussion and examples from current artists using mixed materials, as well as some project instruction (including digital montage). I would like to see more books on this subject. Few seem to exist.

I like this book soooo much. It has been difficult to find materials that talk about assemblages. This book is excellent. I have lots of books, but this will be one of my favorites. I am so thankful to find it in time to help prepare for teaching an assemblage workshop. It has really helped me decide on how to present assemblage construction...what it is and what you might need to get started with this fun art form. Thanks, Diane Maurer-Mathison! The binding is great but the cover glue did not hold and the cover popped off immediately....doesn't bother me though...love the book.

I love this book. My copy is coming to pieces because I refer to it so often. I enjoy it because it is so inspiring, not because it tells me step-by-step how to make anything. Most artists don't want to make exact copies of another artists work anyway. Everytime I look through this book I get energized to go to my studio and get to work!

I like paper art and crafts of all kinds. Very cool ideas. A good book for reference. Laid out well, good instructions. Fun to look at.
I am an artist, and I love this book for it's inspirational quality. I'm so glad Amazon offers so many titles about Joseph Cornell.
