Beryl Dean – Ecclesiastical Sampler – Reproduced with permission of Gawthorpe Textiles Collection. In 1958 Beryl Dean wrote Ecclesiastical Embroidery, a book exploring how a modern approach could be applied to embroidery and textiles for churches. Acknowledging the changes in secular embroidery whilst honouring the rich tradition of ecclesiastical embroidery, Beryl oversaw the production of all manner of garments and altar frontages, including work for Canterbury Cathedral and the Bishop of London.

Ecclesiastical Embroidery by Ruth Black. 24 June ·. It is always nice to have a little challenge when designing and making a stole.

This is a step-by-step guide to the intricacies of the execution of ecclesiastical embroidery and the creation of vestments for use within the Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish religions. It outlines the history of the art and symbolism and fully illustrates the processes.

grand star
I feel the other reviewer is completely unfair to Beryl Dean, the consummate author of church embroidery and one of the most expert British needlework authors of the 20th century. For one thing, that reviewer writes the same review for two of her books that are not the same publication: this book, Ecclesiastical Embroidery is not the same as Church Needlework: that book was published by B.T. Batsford in 1991 and has 176 pages. This book...this "hippie dippy" one...was first published in 1959 and has 256 pages. To satisfy the other reviewer, I'm sure it would be a much expensive book with plates of color photography. As it is, I picked up a pretty good copy of this book for under $2. Picky, picky, picky.

Beryl Dean is the expert's expert. She died at the age of 89 in 2001 after much research and publishing on church embroideries. She was awarded the M.B.E.--Member of the British Empire--partly because she designed and helped work up the Cope for the Bishop of London in celebration of Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee in 1977. The Cope displays 73 churches in London, with St. Paul's Cathedral front and center. As the Archbishop of Canterbury was also being enthroned that year, she also devised the Dean and Canon's Cope.

This book is a standard Batsford Embroidery Paperback with no color pictures at all. It was originally published over 4 decades ago so we must make allowances. Here are the comprehensive chapters:

Approach Through the Past
The Liturgy and The Vestments
Symbolism
Materials
Equipment--Framing Up--Transferring
Gold Work
Applique
Laidwork
Figure Subjects
Whitework, including on Altar-Linens
Lettering, Heraldry and Ceremonial Embroidery
Canvas Work
Making up and Mounting

There are 32 pictures or drawings to illustrate all the historic subjects and the how-to's described. Then there's a full bibliography and index. This is a valuable book. Just the section on goldwork is worth it to me.
