She was born in Osaka, Japan, and received a design degree from Kyoto Saga University of Arts. After graduation, she set out to Tokyo to seek her fortune as a comic-book artist.

Ritsuko Kawai (河井 リツ子, Kawai Ritsuko, born March 3, 1964) is a Japanese manga artist known as the creator of the Hamtaro franchise. Kawai originally created Hamtaro as storybooks for children first published in 1997 and adapted into an anime television series in Japan in July 2000. Hamtaro is about a little hamster and his friends. Hamtaro has gained great popularity and was made into an anime series and a line of merchandising. However, the animated show has since been cancelled.

Ritsuko Kawai (河井 リツ子, Kawai Ritsuko) is the creator of Hamtaro. Born in Toyonaka, Japan on March 3 1964, she drew shōjo manga (Manga aimed at girls) in Ciao magazine. She first created Hamtaro in 1997, a manga about the daily life of a hamster owned by a girl named Yukari. These included tips on how to raise and care for a hamster in real life.
