This book provides a complete course in the traditional skills of quilting via the use of 25 step-by-step projects including patchwork and applique designs. There are simple and more difficult projects for each techique, ranging from cushions and cot quilts to applique, pictures and full-size quilts and there are illustrations of quilted items, both old and new, throughout the book. How do I make how to book reviews unique when they all need to say the same thing? I won't try. This is a good book which covers the subject well. If you like good books which cover the subject well, then try this one.

My sister gave me a copy of this book, which she'd apparently gotten from a cutout rack at the library. It's easy to see why the library was willing to part with The Complete Quilting Course -- it's far from what a modern quilter would reach for.

In fact, there's almost nothing about piecing or traditional patterns at all, and the title is a complete misnomer. It might be better titled "Quilting Techniques Applied to Easy Projects," in which case the book would have been far more of a success.

There are 10 chapters, each of which has 3-5 simple projects: contour quilting (i.e. you stitch around a design on pre-printed fabric), traditional quilting (i.e. a pillow cover, no piecing), shadow quilting, random quilting, tied quilting, trapunto, quilting and applique, patchwork, corded quilting, sashiko quilting. That all sounds like a great overview, but the results are pretty much Sunday-afternoon-projects: a clutch purse, heart box, placemats.

Please don't get me wrong: some of these are very sweet, and they're a novel use of quilting techniques. I also found instructions for techniques I haven't seen elsewhere, such as corded quilting (which is mildly cool). So the book earns a solid spot on my bookshelf, even if I'm not completely sure when I'll use it. (Not to mention that I don't want to hurt my sister's feelings.)

But if you were hoping to find an old-fashioned guide for traditional quilters, you'd be truly disappointed.

I borrowed this book from the library and have found it to be one of the best "how to begin" books around. I've been searching for something that would take me to the basics, and this is it. As the previous reviewer said, it is basic, but it is also detailed and in plain English. I am going to buy this one and go through it step by step as I am just beginning to quilt. If you are a beginner, this is a good book to start with.
