Curious to find out how World War II changed women’s shaving habits? Ever thought about why men stopped wearing high heels? And what makes the fourth finger on our left hand the ring finger ? . The ancient Babylonians, who created that set, were known to have loved caring for their nails. Ming Dynasty elites were also fans of painted nails, using a mixture of egg whites, gelatin, and rubber to dye their nails crimson and black. But the ad told women that modern dancing and sleeveless dresses were the next big thing and that objectionable hair was out. The ad featured a photograph of a young woman in a sleeveless dress.

This book has some really nice designs, but doesn't give good instructions, especially if you're not very experienced. Some designs, it doesn't give ANY instructions at all. So, if you're well experienced and can figure out the how-to from just seeing the picture, you should really enjoy this book.

Fernando DaSilva has a fabulous flair for cutting edge design and a uniquely fashion savvy eye that informs every aspect of his work. He is one of the most innovative designers in the DIY world, with a true gift for seeing the potential in materials that most others miss. His is the only DIY designer to have been written up in Women's Wear Daily magazine and Harper's Bazaar and is the only male Ambassador in the Create Your Style with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS initiative. One can see why when paging through his book Modern Expressions, it is a virtual feast of eye candy that will delight the senses and inspire the reader to break out into exciting new directions in their work. There is no other book in the jewelry making market like it, which is what makes it an absolute must have for anyone who is serious about learning how to think like a designer.

The book has an Haute Couture vibe with gorgeous fashion sketches that suggest how to wear the pieces and lots of style tips from the Brazilian born designer. There are a wide variety of techniques explored including knotting, wire wrapping, exposed wire work, metalsmithing and endlessly creative variations on stringing techniques. You will find an array of interesting materials here including velour and clear plastic tubing, plastic beads, chain and components, various chains, fibers and more. Fernando has a terrific eye for unique combinations of fresh and interesting beads put together in fresh and interesting ways.

Some stand out designs from the book include Rock the Haus, a Bauhaus inspired thoroughly modern study in color and form. The combination of clear acrylic tubing with vibrant yellow sponge beads and simple rounded shapes in silver, white and brown is a melody of simplicity in form. Fiesta in Wonderland, a vibrant confection of candy colored lampwork beads with a truly brilliant stacked acrylic pendant is whimsical and wonderful and is dedicated to this humble reviewer. Monsier Laurent is a mod homage to the work of Yves Saint Laurent, elegant in its simplicity. This piece introduces the reader to using copper sheet metal to create a chic segmented crystal embellished pendant. Perhaps my favorite design (in a book filled with favorites) is Back to the Future. This runway ready asymmetrical piece features SWAROVSKI ELEMENTSbicones threaded through crystal clear acrylic tubing combined with sleek silver chain for a stunning effect. It is truly hard to pick favorites because every design has so much to offer in terms of concept, color, execution and idea.

If you're stuck in a design rut and looking for a book to jump start your creativity, look no further. Fernando DaSilva will take you by the hand and lead your work into fascinating new directions. Viva la Fashion! Viva Fernando!

I love Fernando's book, Modern Expressions, for too many reasons to count, but mainly because it inspires readers to think outside of "beads on a string." Fernando's flair for using color and texture in unexpected ways will inspire you to look at your own designs with fresh eyes. If you're new to jewelry making, the projects in this book will lead you through the steps of making gorgeous, creative jewelry with techniques and concepts you'll use again and again.

Tips are sprinkled throughout the book for how to wear the jewelry, along with ideas for variations so you can adjust the designs to suit your own style. In addition to techniques, materials and step-by-step photos, this book also has a gallery of jewelry designs especially for men, which is pretty rare in beading books! Fernando's love for fashion comes through on every page and gives readers the feeling that you can hone your own fashion sense to make stylish designs.

Fernando lent several pieces from the book to me to wear while filming the #1500 series of the public television show, Beads, Baubles & Jewels. The pieces I wore were glamorous but wearable and very well constructed. When you try your hand at making these designs, you'll know that you really are learning from an expert!

I really like this book, I have studied each project through reading this book from cover to cover, yes there were findings and jewellery parts that I can not get readily in the UK, although I do have enough of my own stock to feel I can improvise and customise, even with my `old' jewellery. I have felt inspired by the style of the jewellery pieces in this book and the techniques used are ones that I can do myself. I really enjoyed the Fabulous Creative Style this book has to offer and I have taken my own jewellery making style to another level.
Thank you Fernando Dasilva for sharing your creativity with the world from JewelLucia.
