I already owned this book and purchased this one for a friend who is learning to crochet. I have crocheted for years, but consider myself to be a beginner crocheter. So, this book is perfect for beginners and for those who don't crochet on a regular basis to remember stitches, types of yarn, etc. This book includes a couple of projects, explains the importance of gauge, finishing a crochet piece and charts explaining yarn weights and crochet hooks. The pictures showing "how to" do a stitch are big enough for me to see without using my readers.

Every Crocheter should own this book.
It is the best of The Basics I have ever seen.

I ended up taking a class anyway since I was having a a hard time learning with just the book. I guess in that regard, it just depends on how you learn best - personally I am a hands on learner/I needed to actually see someone else doing it. I have only started one crochet project from the book, since my class had me do other projects first. The granny ripple from the book is going well except width wise it is like 2 inches shorter then their measurements, and I have followed their directions to a 'T'. I think I might just restart it so I can add some width. Overall I probably would not recommend the book.

This book is like if One Hundred Years of Solitude and Ulysses had a love child that was really into crochet. Totally sporadic and vague explanations, and the drawings were the only thing that taught me anything.
