Enrico Colle is professor of the History of Decorative Arts at the University of Bologna, and an expert on Italian furniture and period interiors. He has studied and catalogued the decorative art and furniture of Italy's major palaces and former royal residences.

This book is a must for lovers of fine furniture. The "Empire" style shown and described here makes for a great visual and reading experience. This book is HEAVY and comes in a slip case. It is grouped somewhat by region in Italy and each section starts with a description of that region and the major craftsmen and patrons and then goes to several pieces of furniture with a detailed description of each piece. Every item is WELL photographed; some with extreme close-up additional shots to show detail/quality/finishes. Also, the publishers did not waste space; on most of the pages with a picture of a single piece of furniture there are several smaller photos in black-and-white of similar pieces to provide further examples of the maker/style being shown. These smaller photos are then repeated in the back with further descriptions. After reading this book you learn a lot about the period and the "look" of the furniture. Very helpful in spotting period pieces when you are in the auction room or in an antique shop! Highly recommended.

This book was suggested by one of the experts from the Antiques Roadshow. Having received the book I found in the middle of the book the chair I was looking for ordered by non other than the sister of Napoleon for here palace. If you are interested in the wonderful furniture produced in the early 1800's in Italy and how it was influenced by France, then this book is for you. Fantastic photos abound.
