This book was written by Alexander Solzhenitsyn in 1971 and while it is not as heart wrenching as Solzhenitsyn’s In the Russian Army of 1914, rear guards did not save themselves by surrendering. The prose in this book is excellent. The only criticism I have is that since this battle is as central to Russian history as Gettysburg is to American history there isn’t a great deal of historical context. There are a lot of Russian and Prussian names and places that can be overwhelming too since there are no maps.
