PANZER IV is three stories in one. The first 70-odd pages of the book focus on the Panzer IV's birth, evolution and combats on the various fronts. Designed as an infantry support tank, the P. pfw IV, originally armed with a short-barrel 75mm gun, was re-equipped with a long-barrel, high-velocity 75mm gun and up-armored to counter Soviet T-34s, becoming Germany's Main Battle Tank.

Carlos Caballero Jurado, Lucas Molina Franco. The Panzer IV was perhaps the most versatile, useful and numerous German tank in service with the Wehrmacht in the Second World War. For its presence on all fronts, its use as a platform for different types of t and anti-tank, and its uninterrupted production during the whole conflict, it certainly deserves to be qualified as one of the best war machines of all time. The main role played by the Panzer IV in the history of the Panzerwaffe was never dreamt of, either by its German tank crews or its designers.

Read Blue Division Soldier 1941–45, by Carlos Caballero Jurado online on Bookmate – The all-volunteer 'Blue Division' was a formation that allowed Franco's technically neutral Spain to support Naz. This book narrates the experiences of the common soldier, exploring his motivation for serving the Wehrmacht, and detailing his dramatic experiences in a brutal and hostile theatre of World War II. This book is part a of new series coming to us from AF Editions in Spain. Published last year in Spanish, they are now appearing for the first time in English. The book features a comprehensive narrative text and a combination of exceptionally high quality 4 color black and white photos accompanied by spectacular full color profiles of each of the tanks-all custom created for these books. AF Editions have pioneered a system for producing profiles which produce a unique texture rich look and a level of detail that is unprecedented. This series and the books will be of great interest to all WWII enthusiasts and to modelers in particular.

While this isn't Panzer IV primer, it does contain some good info for the Panzer IV afficianado. Especially nice is the information provided regarding Germany's sale of Panzer IV's to the Spanish - and where those vehicles subsequently ended up. The color plates are nice for the modeler. A good addition to any Panzer IV library.

Though the Tiger and Panther tanks got all the press coverage, the Panzerkampfwagen IV was the backbone of Germany's Panzerwaffe throughout World War II. The only German tank in production before the war, the Panzer IV was still being manufactured at war's end. Progressively developed from 1937 to 1945, the Panzer IV saw combat on all fronts and even had a postwar career, serving various countries until the 1960s! Carlos Jurado and Lucas Franco describe the development and combat history of this German workhorse in PANZERKAMPFWAGEN IV, THE WEHRMACHT'S ARMOURED FIRST, a 2006 AF Editions release.

PANZER IV is three stories in one. The first 70-odd pages of the book focus on the Panzer IV's birth, evolution and combats on the various fronts. Designed as an infantry support tank, the Pz.Kpfw IV, originally armed with a short-barrel 75mm gun, was re-equipped with a long-barrel, high-velocity 75mm gun and up-armored to counter Soviet T-34s, becoming Germany's Main Battle Tank. Over 8,600 Panzer IVs were manufactured, the tank making up over 30% of the Panzerwaffe tank inventory. A second chapter details the Panzer IV's Spanish service from 1943 to 1965. A final, concluding chapter describes the renovation of a 'gate guardian' Spanish Panzer IV.

PANZER IV has many things going for it: good paper stock, an excellent collection of b&w and color pix and color profiles and four-view of 46 different Panzer IV models serving in German, Spanish, Bulgarian, Hungarian and Finnish colors. The color artwork by Julio Caeiro and Luis & Carlos Crespo is absolutely SUPERB! On the negative side, the translation from Spanish to English makes for clunky reading.

Though PANZER IV - visually - is a very appealing package, the belabored text and lack of an index resulted in a four-star rating. Overall, the book offers a comprehensive, well-illustrated overview of one of Germany's longest-serving and most effective metal monsters. Recommended.

Note: Though Amazon lists the book at $47.42, I purchased a copy from Edward R. Hamilton for $7.95!

For the money, you can't beat this book. One of the best things going for it are the numerous illustrations of the tank in profile. There are many of these profiles considering the length of the book and price. Many good photos too.
