Gerhard Koop (Author), Klaus-Peter Schmolke (Author), Geoffrey Brooks (Translator) & 0 more. This book is an outstanding book about the little known German Warship Admiral Hipper which went on to survive World War Two. Only to be destroyed in the Bikini Island Atomic Bomb Test as so many other captured ships from that conflict were. Shame when you consider that these ships could have been GREAT show pieces of living history had they not been so carelesly abused.

This volume introduces the heavy cruisers of the Admiral Hipper class. Development and Construction. It begins with the developmental stages of the type, providing details of design and construction and comprehensive technical tables covering armament, machinery and equipment. The term ‘heavy cruiser’ came into use as a result of the post-World War I Washington Conference held by the victorious naval powers in an attempt to end the naval arms race.

Of the five heavy cruisers allowed by the Anglo-German Naval Treaty of 1935 only . There is an interested contrast here with his book on German light cruisers, where he was very critical of the ships themselves.
Of the five heavy cruisers allowed by the Anglo-German Naval Treaty of 1935 only three were ever completed. The fourth was chosen for conversion to an aircraft carrier, but not completed in that role either, and the fifth abandoned while under construction. The three that were completed had very different fates. The Admiral Hipper was wrecked by RAF bombs in 1945. This entry in Koop's impressive series on German warships looks at all five of these ships, with the most material on the three that were completed.
