The English Civil War (1642–1651) was a series of civil wars and political machinations between Parliamentarians ("Roundheads") and Royalists ("Cavaliers") principally over the manner of England's governance. The first (1642–1646) and second (1648–1649) wars pitted the supporters of King Charles I against the supporters of the Long Parliament, while the third (1649–1651) saw fighting between supporters of King Charles II and supporters of the Rump Parliament.

This military atlas was a HUGE disappointment. The maps in this so-called atlas are nothing more than very simple maps showing the shorelines of a portion of Great Britain or Ireland with locations of cities, towns and English Civil War battlefields marked as black dots on a plain white background and rivers marked as squiggly black lines. Even the close-in battlefield maps lack any meaningful detail. What I expected to get was a military atlas that was multicolored with prominent topographical features, e.g. hills, ridges, rivers, valleys, etc. delineated by contour interval lines or in some other visibly useful and pleasing way. A map with such clearly delineated features is necessary so that a reader can analyze why and how topography affected leaders' military decisions and the actual course of military events. In addition, it would have been useful to have at least one map that illustrated the locations of shires and their boundaries as they existed during the period in all three of the kingdoms as a military history of the English Civil Wars requires some knowledge of the location and geographic relationship between the various parts of England, Scotland and Ireland. A very big disappointment!!!

As a novice to the English Civil War I found this book very easy to
read & grasp. I really appreciated the military situation maps listed
by year, it helped put the battles & campaigns into a logical framework.
Buying this book is money well spent!
