Stephen Mansfield has captured the essence of this giant of the twentieth century. Volumes are written about great and famous men such as Winston Churchill, but to learn of the basic life, service to humanity, character, humor, and vision of Churchill, one need go no further than this book. Mansfield has collected the importance of who he was, what made him who he was, and how he was by exploring his life, his writings, and his service to the world and our freedoms through his service in many high level positions in Great Britain, especially as Prime Minister during WWII. Once read, this book captures Churchill as a truly amazing gentleman, a dedicated patriot, and a servant of the people. Mansfield helped me know Churchill in a way I may never have learned by wading through a much more voluminous biography.

Mr. Mansfield has done a very nice job. He writes with the presupposition that history is the outworking of the providence and plan of God, a presupposition I accept, and which I believe is overwhelmingly confirmed by history itself. We all view the world through our presuppositions, and none of us can claim "neutrality." Those who "ding" Mansfield for his Christianity or for illuminating the Christian faith of his subject miss the point of the book. Would you have us all live in the ghetto where the only view allowed is secular humanism? Thankfully, we still live in a country where one is allowed to have Christian presuppositions. It was Mansfield's purpose to write from this point of view. If you "ding" him for having that purpose, then are you not saying that there should no freedom to express opinions different from your own? I am most amused by the reviewer who implies that Mansfield cannot understand England because of that country's current spiritual condition. Surely Churchill's England was different from today's England. England's decline (and our own here in America) can be directly traced to abandoning the Author of our lives and freedoms. Mansfield makes the point that Churchill understood England's place in preserving the freedoms of its Christian heritage, not only for itself but also for the western civilization, against the Nazi threats (definitely not the forces of goodness and light).

This history is written by a Christian (Mansfield) about a Christian (Churchill). If Churchill was, indeed, someone who experienced true conversion to Christianity, then his faith would have permeated all that he was and did. It would and did give him the necessary heart and spirit to persevere under severe trial. Conversion is not a matter which has no impact upon the personal and professional life of a man - it will govern all that he is - his thinking and life.

What a great little book! I am also delighted to discover that Churchill, when asked whom he should like to be if he could not be himself, thought about it and answered "Mrs. Churchill's second husband." All of his manly achievements notwithstanding, that aspect of his character put him over the top in my estimation.

I had asked a colleague who he was most influenced by in his life and without a second's hesitation he said Winston Churchill. Not being exposed much to Winston Churchill I read a number of books about him but this one was by far the most explosive.

Churchill was an amazing individual and not really what he has been portrayed to be in the press and folklore. If you are looking for a real portrait of a remarkable human being of iron-willed steadfastness, this is a "Must Read." I actually took this book to work and it is being passed around so much I doubt that I will ever get it back but I see it on a different desk each week. We have all benefited from reading the book.

A small book about a hugely important man. A small book with a great deal of information about Mr. Churchill. My admiration and respect for him grew by leaps. This book should be invaluable to students of U. S. and British history. It paints a picture of a man who overcame a lonely, if privileged childhood, to become a great leader of his country in a time of great danger. His inner courage is stunning.

one of the best men to ever live. this book dose a great job of summarizing what made him great and give just a little background into what made him great. doesn't go very in depth but is enough to get most people interested in Churchill's life. really focuses more on his character and personality/ how he became great than what happened in his life. highly recommend.
