Lots of books on Scottish history, Scottish culture. This book is a nice read and covers some of the history in a very readable manner - whereas some history books on Scotland are virtually unreadable. This book is descriptive in a way that other books are not. It is in a style that is interestingly informative giving the reader a look into the heart and mind of Scotland and the Scots. Geddes MacGregor is a Scot who has lived out of Scotland, giving him an advantage of knowing his subject but also knowing what people who have never had the opportunity of going to Scotland want to know.

With wit, the author explores the distinctions between the Highlands and Lowlands, the solidarity of its cities and its castles, and the beauty of the scenery from the wilder north to the gentle, comely, rolling border country and the rugged islands. He explores its traditions, eccentricities, and contradictions: clans, kilts, tartans, and bagpipes; golf, dances, and Highland games as well as education, religion and politics and much much more.
