A new history of India.
A New History of India book. Stanley Wolpert has condensed more than 4,000 years of India's history into a graceful and engaging text.
A New History of India by Stanley Wolpert is a one-volume history of India. Unfortunately, it is not a very good one. It appears to be written as a textbook and has many of the faults of textbooks covering such a vast subject. I often felt I needed an expert on Indian history to fill in the gaps. While one can empathize with the tremendous task of writing a one volume history of any country, the great failing of this book is that it does not give the reader a good overall perspective on the political and socio-economic development of the country

Stanley Wolpert, a leading authority on Indian history, paints memorable portraits of all the key participants, including Gandhi, Churchill, Attlee, Nehru, and Jinnah, with special focus on British viceroy, Lord Louis Mountbatten. Wolpert places the blame for the catastrophe largely on Mountbatten, the flamboyant cousin of the king, who rushed the process of nationhood along at an absurd pace.
Stanley Wolpert's book on the history of India remains the most comprehensive and readable work ever written on this subject. The extensive story of the people of the Indian subcontinent, belonging to four different nations, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, from 2500 BC to the end of the 20th century is beautifully laid out in this book. Wolpert has successfully and honestly documented the struggles and aspirations of the people of this subcontinent. Publication Date - June 2008. From a carefully balanced perspective, Wolpert presents a fair and truthful record of India's history-he offers both a triumphant portrayal of the brightest achievements of Indian civilization as well as a sobering examination of its persistent social inequities and economic and political corruption.
