Appomattox Court House was the site where the Army of Northern Virginia was forced to surrender on April 9, 1865. While most of Lee's officers favored surrender, others did not fear that it would lead to the end of the war. Lee also sought to prevent his army from melting away to fight on as guerrillas, a move that he felt would have long-term harm for the country. At 8:00 AM Lee rode out with three of his aides to make contact with Grant. Several hours of correspondence ensued which led to a ceasefire and a formal request from Lee to discuss surrender terms.

James Longstreet served under General Robert E. Lee and witnessed the Civil War from start to finish. This chronicle of his service is a must-have work for readers interested in the Civil War, its battles, and its legacy. As the chief strategist to the Commander of the Confederate Army, Longstreet generated many of the military plans that the generals of the South took into battle. After the war and to his death, some blamed Longstreet for the South’s surrender. In tones both blunt and candid, Longstreet writes what he saw, what he knows, and what he thinks the war meant to a country divided.

When 1865 opened the Confederacy's end was on the horizon: the Mississippi cut off Texas and Arkansas from the rest of the South, Lee's Army of Northern Virginia was pinned to the gates of Richmond and Petersburg and General Sherman had control of Savannah, Georgia, and was poised for a march through the Carolinas which would be a repeat of his devastating March through Georgia.

In this volume of the series Grant's Army of the Potomac finally disrupts the defensive ring around Petersburg and Lee's army, badly outnumbered and suffering for lack of food and equipment, abandoned the lines in an effort to retreat west and eventually join Johnston's army in the Carolinas. Meanwhile, Sherman's army set off to the northwest, capturing Columbia and burning it. His army met no resistance until fighting Monroe's Crossroads (not mentioned in this book), Averasboro and Bentonville in North Carolina. This book covers the surrender of Lee and Johnston and discusses some controversies involved.

This volume includes sidebars on Scenes of Ruin in Columbia, Wilson's Raid, paintings of Lee's surrender, the Fallen at Fort Mahone, and Standoff on the James. Well-written and illustrated with maps, photos, artwork and pictures of some artifacts. While the maps the volume contains are very good there are some which could have been included to clarify some aspects of the fight, such as the route of march of Sherman through the Carolinas (or indeed, any of the Carolina battles). Instead, contemporary maps are used and are of dubious value considering their scale. Still, a good book with first-hand experiences by many of the participants.
