The Art of Early New England Stonecarving. It is to this effort that Dickran and Ann Tashjian's Memorials for Children of Change: The Art of Early New England Stonecarving makes an important contribution. By Dickran and Ann Tashjian. There is certainly plenty to interest the antiquarian in this comprehensive study of those 17th and 18thcentury gravestones that so astonish us with their plainspoken artistry when we encounter them in the simple graveyards of preRevolutionary New England, but the object of this investigation is primarily esthetic. An excellent book by Dickran and Ann Tashjian about the art of early New England stone carving. When I got this book I was surprised that it's already forty years old. I was also surprised at the amount of information packed into this one book. One of my favorite chapters is portraits in stone and spirit. That chapter is about some of the portrait carvings on gravestones, much of it about Ministers from different towns. I think these are mostly old rubbings from gravestones along with a few pictures of the stones. Funny how things change, as far as I know nowadays they do not encourage rubbing of stones any more because of possible damage to the gravestones. At the end of the book are some epitaphs from quite a few towns in some of the New England states, I've been to many of these graveyards myself. The only reason I'm giving four stars for this review is because the book is hard cover and just so darned heavy it's not funny. A great read with lots of useful information.
