Anna Freud's work is as important today as it was when she published this book in 1936. The reading is full of invitations for further thoughts and reflections about the various defense mechanisms with special emphasis on the ego. The style is friendly in the best sense. The only problem is its high information density.

CHAPTER 3 – THE MECHANISMS OF DEFENSE It occurs for the first time in 189. o describe the ego’s struggle against painful or unendurable ideas or affects. Were it not for the intervention of the ego or of the external forces which the ego represents, every instinct would know only one fate – gratification.

Anna Freud (3 December 1895 – 9 October 1982) was an Austrian-British psychoanalyst. She was born in Vienna, the sixth and youngest child of Sigmund Freud and Martha Bernays. She followed the path of her father and contributed to the field of psychoanalysis. Alongside Melanie Klein, she may be considered the founder of psychoanalytic child psychology.

When The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense was first published in German in 1936 it was at once recognized as a major contribution to psychoanalytic psychology, and its translation into English quickly followed. More than half a century later it enjoys the status of a classic and a founding text in ego psychology . Written by a pioneer of child analysis, and illustrated by fascinating clinical pictures drawn from childhood and adolescence, it discusses those adaptive measures by which painful and unwanted feeling-states are kept at bay or made more bearable. The author's arguments have a clarity and cogency reminiscent of her father's and the work is remarkable undated. Nothing stands still, but The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defense has unmistakably passed the test of time.

A classic text, and a must read for any psychologist or psychotherapist, regardless of his/her theoretical persuasion. Anna Freud's book was the first attempt at organizing the different ways in which individuals try to cope with their internal drives and affects, with the people in their lives, and the external reality in general. This book had a tremendous influence in the mental health field from its publication, launching the field of ego psychology, and stimulating both theoretical and empirical work, which still resonates today. Though I was nurtured in a different school of thought in psychotherapy, I am able to appreciate the lucid writing of Anna Freud, who made every effort to make more accessible some of his father's concepts, and still leave her mark in the field. Contemporary psychoanalysis is still marching at the beat of Object Relations Theory, but the contribution of Anna Freud and Ego Psychology continues to be valuable when working with less compromised personality structures.
