And somehow they raised their little girl in Jim Crow Birmingham to believe that even if she couldn’t have a hamburger at the Woolworth’s lunch counter, she could be President of the United States. In conducting this journey into the past I had the pleasure of returning to the places my parents lived and talking with their friends, associates, and students.

Ordinary People is Judith Guest's first novel. Published in 1976, it tells the story of a year in the life of the Jarretts, an affluent suburban family trying to cope with the aftermath of two traumatic events. Although it won critical praise and awards upon its release, it is best remembered today as the basis for the 1980 film version, which won four Academy Awards including Best Picture. It is also assigned in many American secondary school English classes.

Men are not commonly known for self-disclosure, especially about personal struggles, deep concerns and vulnerabilities.  Male public-disclosure is even more rare.  This men's anthology offers a broad spectrum of men's authentic accounts of facing and ultimately surmounting major life challenges, adversities, and even intense pain.  The forty refreshingly-open and diverse life stories provide a "picture window" into the psyches and souls of the courageous authors.  Readers will gain valuable insights into the difficult journeys men often take toward attaining genuine satisfaction, well-being and success.  Such knowledge promotes increased compassion, respect, resilience, balance, healing, appreciation, faith and growth.Men and teenage boys will derive increased self-understanding from transparent male models, as well as a strong sense of support and inspiration.  Women, who tend to voraciously seek inside information about men's inner nature, processes and struggles, will benefit as well from perusing this book.

The misleading title sucked me in, unfortunately. What a disappointment. If you're looking for inspired stories of real men, there's only a couple here...keep looking.

Everyone should read this for inspiration, insight, and understanding of others and yourself. Easy read. Definitely proves everyone can make their own journey and not follow in someone else path.

The book wasn't what I was expecting and I found did not meet the title's premise.
They may have been defining moments for the men, they certainly came across as ordinary, but nothing extraordinary or inspiring.

Now, I didn't finish reading the stories as I became bored with the book, in spite of trying to force myself to read one more story hoping to get something insightful or inspirational from the next; nope, didn't happen. :/
Realistic
This is a thoughtful, reality-based anthology of stories from forty remarkable men. As I read each chapter, I found myself getting quieter and quieter inside. I could relate to experiences or feelings in each man's story. Beautifully written by men from many different walks of life, the author has chosen just the "right" sample of men to tell their story and reflect on the human condition. There is encouragement for all men to feel safe to be their authentic self; a worthy intention for all people in this life. I am inspired and will use quotes from this book for future reference. Excellent, quick read. I highly recommend it.

There is so little guidance these days in what it really means to be a man - (plus roles and models have changed so much that there is much confusion). This book offers the perspective of 40 different men on what it means to be a man in today's world and the changes and transformation they needed to undergo in their journey to manhood. Inspiring stuff!!!

This incredibly readable and engaging book features authentic accounts of men's very diverse triumphs over significant adversity and life challenges and is filled with spirit, vulnerability, genuine revealing and humor that is earthy and realistic. There is nothing like the truth told in first-person stories to really set us free, or at least point the way ahead. Contributing authors comprise a wide range of ages, races, religions, nations, etc. What they have in common is a strong character, service-mindedness, and a lot of love and courage. A labor of love now becomes a gift to share, and a whole bunch of beacons to shine into the nooks and crannies of our own lives.

I loved the trust these writers have in the audience. I got a lot of insight into how their values were formed and how they are either coping or making great strides to their physical and emotional balance. I would highly recommend Ordinary Men, Extraordinary Lives to any man who has been through great challenges or who is looking for inspiration to build a better character. I highly recommend Jim Sharon's book! As a father, and most especially now a grandfather of five grandsons, Jim's book will be one I will save for all of them as they continue their journeys along life's way. Thanks, Jim!
