Thrills and Regressions . And what a book it is! You can even understand todays culture war between the democrats and the republicans applying the two different types Balint describes. The first one (philobat) lives in "friendly expanses" trusts in (let's admit it) childish ways, and wants the "new" and "change" at any price always believing in the "Good" of the world.

Are you sure you want to remove Thrills and regressions. from your list? Thrills and regressions.

At first reading this is a seductive book, written with wit and charm and bringing familiar material into new relationships. The seduction lies in the persuasive simplicity of the ideas and in the absence of any propositions which might arouse our resistance. It represents, in part, the latest of the many attempts to arrive at a theory of psychological types.

This is my favourite book of Michael Balint. The second one (ocnophil) chooses to be suspicous, mistrusting and critical of just about everything except the collection of objects with which he forms an allianz. (His father, his tribe and it's religion, constituition, truth, tradition etc.)
Jonathan Haidt in his newest book "The righteous Mind: Why people are divided by politicts and religion" concludes, that what separates republicans from democrats is that they follow three more values in their lives: Loyality (as in tribe) Authority (as in tradition) and Sanctity (as in religion).
I suspect that when Meyers-Briggs added a fourth dimensions to the three created by C. G. Jung (Extravert-Introvert, feeling-thinking and sensing-intuiting) they were influenced by Balint. They called it Perception (philobat) and Judging (ocnophil).
Anyway, if you are interested in these kind of things, don't miss this book!
