As a deaf and hard of hearing specialist, this is the BEST book I have ever seen to explain how devastating middle ear infections can be for young children. $20-something is a decent price.
This book is extremely well illustrated with variations on the theme of middle ear infections, which are so miserable for those who have the problem - and their parents. Teachers can suddenly understand why the children with this on-going problem seem so out of sorts, lethargic, miserable and not able to learn under these conditions. Get your child an audiogram through your doctor if it continues for years, to establish hearing levels.
Children with this problem, if it lasts year after year - especially in the early, language learning years - CAN qualify for "deaf and hard of hearing" and/or "speech, language and hearing" services through their local school district to assist parents in accessing medical and amplification support to make sure the child doesn't fall behind during the YEARS it can take to clear up chronic cases.
With this book, the middle ear infection aspect of "the invisible handicap" is PLAINLY apparent to those who doubt how impacting this is on children.
I highly recommend this as a primary tool for anyone working with children with hearing problems. FIND IT! It should be reprinted.
As a speech therapist, I refer to this book often when I need a quick reference or review. This book is very thorough, yet concise. It is a small book (27 pages), but it has beautiful illustrations and very clear explanations. It covers subjects from the definition of ear infecitons to how ear infections relate to breast feeding/bottle feeding. It is full of facts and figures, and is a reliable source for parents or for someone who may be giving a parent inservice on ear infections. I believe it to be a little pricey, but since it can be considered a medical reference, the price matches the expertise.
