The author of the bestselling Minding the Body, Mending the Mind, offers a compassionate, healing guide for overcoming the devastating effects of guilt. I do like Joan Borysenko, but found myself unable to return to this book after getting to a certain place. It began to sound too-what?-spacey? I read a lot of mystical-type books, but some just sound too made up.

Although written in the 1980's, many of the themes addressed are still relevant and popular today with the main lessons concerning forgiveness, empathy and unconditional love. It's very easy to read; concise and straightforward. The author comes from a christian perspective and I really enjoyed this book because, for me, it read like a summary of many other self-help type books I've devoured on my spiritual quest

Postulating that guilt is the root cause of many physical and emotional ailments, the author presents a mind/body system intended to eradicate guilt and promote well-being. Rejecting both formal religions and science, she develops a psycho-spiritual program that focuses inward on the human psyche; indeed, many of her good pointers for overcoming guilt are embedded in mystical and visionary experience. Borysenko affirms the reality of visions and relates instances of her patients' seeing the light-literally-and recovering from physical pain. The book is replete with New Age-type jargon:.

This was a gift, my friend told me she had problems with gilt, after talking for a little while I sort of got and idea what she need it, I star browsing on the books section of Amazon, reading the differents descriptions and reviews of people that had purchased the book. I recognized the author, I have red some of her books before. After my friend received the book I wanted to know her opinion. I waited a couple weeks to give her a chance to read some of it. She was so elated, she told me this book is like water to a person is dying from thirst. She said she cried and felt like the author was speaking to her. I was very happy to hear that because I am always trying to help my friends in every way I can. I bought the book for myself but I have not have the time to read it because I am finishing another book. A friend of mine sort of browsed through the book and he was making good comments about it.

This book is in my top five books of all time. Not only does it deal with causes of guilt but it explores practical ways of healing the guilt, forgiving one's self and others, and provides numerous exercises and meditations along with a large resource list to delve further into the subject. It incorporates the spiritual nature into the healing but does so in a way that it is not specific to any religion, or even to one with no religious tradition.

From my experience Joan Borysenko may be the premier authority in integrating these subjects. She draws on experts from many fields along with her own experience and research and is able to present her conclusions and recommendations in an easy to understand format.

I couldn't recommend this book more highly.

I have read many of Joan Borysenko's books, but this was the first book of her books that I read. This author's style of writing is very personal, accessible, and readable. She offers a wonderful framework for understanding life's challenges, difficulties, and lessons, as well as effective tools for coping with difficult feelings and personal struggle. Her imagery is beautiful. The strategies she offers to reduce suffering and increase peace of mind are helpful and easy to employ. I recommend this book without reservation for those who enjoy reading self help books.

This book, while sometimes dense, was helpful in understanding how to deal with the very human propensity toward guilt and feeling bad about oneself. It's a wonderful book for people who suspect or realize their ambitions and decisions are grounded in self-loathing. It also provides practical motivation for building a positive orientation for operating in the world.

I like the book, but she jump's around alot and she give so much information, you get lost following the original thought.
This book is a keeper. Borysenko gently holds a mirror up for us to peek into our essence and see through our masks. We are a kaleidoscope of feelings, a symphony of thoughts drumming our consciousness, and much, much more. Joy comes with the observer, with insight into our humanity, with unraveling the heartless assumptions we have made about ourselves, and with letting go of the shame we carry. An articulate, important book.
