Dr. Friedman's latest book (The Everything Health Guide to Thyroid Disease: Professional Advice on Getting the Right Diagnosis, Managing Your Symptoms, And Feeling Great) is much more than just about the thyroid. He explains how the thyroid is affected by other parts of the body, especially the endocrine system. He talks about the management of the thyroid hormones and how other hormones can influence each of these. He shows the reader the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, and how each of these three influences the other. Not only is the book comprehensive, it is well written, well organized, and easy to understand.

Dr. Friedman and Ms.Yu bring to the reader the latest research, reasons why our hormones can get out of kilter, and ideas to take to one's own physician for better, informed medical care.

Very up-to-date, accurate and useful info for anyone with thyroid disease.

It's written by a professional and based on medical science, clinical experience and common sense.

It's a very comprehensive book and covers Hashimoto's, Graves, and other thyroid diseases, as well as symptoms and treatments.

This is the best book I've found on the topic.

As a sufferer of Thyroid disease, I found this author to be very knowledgable, giving me an insight to the disease, and how to cope with the disease.

I have no thyroid any more but still struggle with my medications and questions and this gives me more information than the average book. I also like the book by Mary Shomon which I own.

I am a patient of Dr Friedman (travelling thousands of miles to do so) and he has helped me with my pituitary, adrenal and other hormone issues. What is nice about this book is that it covers the role of thyroid with the other hormones.

You really only feel good when all of them are right. This book is a good basic book for those that are just learning about the thyroid but still has enough for those that are more experienced in thyroid issues.

thyroid disease.

Just the Book I needed!! Helped me decide what to do next! Thanks for the great information!
I recently had the pleasure of reading this book. I read this book from cover to cover. I agree with some of the past reviewers that this book had some insight. I have had thyroid disease for quite some time now, but I was already knowledgeable on the subject. I just read this book to see if I could find out anything new. While the book was a relatively easy read for me, I know that this book could be troublesome for the average reader who is not familiar with medical terminology, the endocrine system, biological mechanisms of the body, etc. The authors pride themselves on having a simplified book that everyone can read and understand. I would have to disagree with them there. Particularly with reference to the sections on the parathyroid and thyroid hormones they throw around a lot of jargon that can be very confusing to the average reader. Also in several instances, the authors give hormonal abbreviations without explaining what the hormones are first. Another big pet peeve of mine with this book was the order of it. The authors mention topics like hyper/hypothyroidism quite frequently in the first few chapters, but decide not to write about them until later in the book (Chapter 10, 11, etc.). The authors also make reference to lab tests, nuclear medicine, and radiological procedures; but do offer in depth explanations until much later in the text. They will write a few sentences about it, and say "we will discuss this more in depth later." I also found this book to be very repetitive. At least 50 pages of this book could have been eliminated from all the repetition. Also, the chapter on thyroid diet could have been eliminated altogether. In a nutshell all that chapter really says is to eat a proper diet and exercise. Who hasn't heard that by now? There was also a chapter that discussed finding a good doctor and suggested tips like find a doctor who will listen to you, and who will do what is best for you. I think that can be chalked up to having common sense. With that being said, there was some useful information in this book, such as the index of helpful websites in the back (which by the way could tell you everything that this book said and more for free). Overall, this book is an oversimplified text with jargon thrown in the middle of it, and helpful information here and there.
