In "Seasons of Deception," Beatrice investigates the quick decline of her elderly gay neighbor after a suspicious woman moves in with him. I finished reading Kate McLachlan's HEARTS, DEAD AND ALIVE last night. I can tell you, I've enjoyed her other writing, but this one is certainly my favorite so far. The plot had plenty of mystery and suspense for me and the story of the teacher and these kids in a small community felt very true, for better and worse. I was so involved with her characters and the inner turmoil Kim was going through. I enjoyed the love story and found the transition Kim had to push herself through - that of a woman who didn't take these relationships seriously to one who understood the seriousness of a relationship and just how "precious" they can be, very engrossing. I also really loved the way she wove throughout the story the struggles, as well as the joys and pleasures, of living a life true to yourself as a lesbian woman. As a straight woman, not only did I not feel alienated by the relationships and situations of the women in this story, I was drawn in. We all need to find a way to live true to ourselves, regardless of our sexual orientation. It was ultimately a story of finding and accepting love and it shows, as many of us have known all along, that love, whatever the form it takes, is simply love. I would highly recommend this book.

This one's not in the time travel series. Straightforward tale of a school teacher who finds a heart in a dumpster. Chaos ensues. Very well told. Kate's become a writer I trust to be worth the price of the book. Well done. I only wish it had been longer.
