My son really enjoyed this 2 years ago when he was 7. In conjuction with a few other sets and experiment books it really sparked his imagination. Safety warning, I seem to recall him forgetting to unwire some things, and when I went into his lab" later on, the wired objects were hot--don't leave your scientist unattended like I did. I'm not sure if it was hot enough to burn someone or start a fire, but still...

Ordered to see if my puls could work with the kid. Liked the kit but choose for another kit. Individually for youngsters a fine kit to learn some basics of physics.

"Spark!" is a "Pop Science" Cool Kit from the Book Studio and DK that provides children 8 years and up with "Fast and Furious Fun with Electricity." This interactive kit provides an introduction, starting with a look inside an atom and ending with a series of simple experiments. The 32-page booklet written by Ian Gram with illustrations by the Peter Bull Art Studio provides a bit more than a simple introduction to the subject, looking at conductors and insulators, portable power, the coin battery, and other topics. The result is a nice introduction to the basics of electricity, although the key attraction here for most youngsters will be getting to do a series of actual experiments with electricity.

There is an initial distinction made between static electricity and current electricity and most of the experiments kids get to do with this kit have to do with the former. The Dancing Paper experiment allows kids to se the effect of static electricity, while the Static Balloons experiment shows the effects of force between electric charges. Then youngsters get to make an Electroscope, which is a simple device for showing whether or not something is electrically charged. For the grand finale to show how you can make electricity form fruit and vegetables, kids get to make a Lemon Battery. The kit includes balloons, 6 LEDs, and connecting wires for these four experiments. To my surprise none of the experiments in this pack require batteries, but there are some household items you will need for these experiments, including a sheet of thin paper, scissors, a ball of string, aluminum foil, lemons, pennies, and paper clips.

This is one of a six initial Cool Kits that the Book Studio has put out for DK to date, no doubt to see how well they do before others follow. I was never really into science so I found these basic experiments pretty interesting and I would think that youngsters will find this an enjoyable first step in what could prove to be a future in science. The other "Pop Science" kit is about magnets and entitled "Attract!" There are also a couple of "Build Your Own" kits where you get to make "Cool Trains" and "Cool Trucks," and a pair of "Blast from the Past" kits that enable kids to "Be an Ancient Egyptian" and "Be an Ancient Roman." Of the first dozen Cool Kits this one was my favorite, primarily because it gave me more to do than the others (okay, it was more challenging too, but I never took physics or chemistry or even biology so this is all news to me).
